It is closely related to the North American wood duck, the only other member of the genus Aix. Aix is an Ancient Greek word which was used by Aristotle to refer to an unknown diving bird, and galericulata is the Latin for a wig, derived from galerum, a cap or bonnet. Pairs of ducks are often seen swimming close together. It is told the Mandarin ducks stay faithful to their mate throughout their Lifetime. These ducks are told to be very peaceful; they get along without bickering and live in perfect harmony. Their love for each other is so profound that if one of them dies or disappears, the duck left behind will be devastated. Without his/her mate the remaining duck will have no will power to live anymore and death is soon inevitable.
