“OK, well, here goes nothing.” Frank sat in the driver’s seat of the Land Rover flipping switches and adjusting adjustments for the miniature graser he had created to stifle the Giza Death Star should it be deployed. Beside him was a Plexiglas above-ground swimming pool full of sloshing water. “So wait a minute,” piped up one of the assembly. “What exactly are we witnessing here?” “This is a graser,” joked Frank doing a Doctor Evil from *Austin Powers* impersonation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voSpOrimkMY “That is, a Gamma-ray laser. It’s based on the same principle as *optical* phase conjugation. “In optical phase conjugation, a laser beam is directed at a target and light rays reflected back from it, but scattered due to passing through the gases of the atmosphere, enter the phase conjugator, a chamber containing a nonlinear medium. In this nonlinear medium, the scattered rays interact with two opposed laser beams of similar wavelength to form a hologram-like pattern called a ‘grating.’ “The grating pattern essentially enables the system to lock onto its target. A powerful laser is then discharged into this grating pattern, whereupon the cohered laser reflects in such a way as to produce a powerful outgoing laser beam that retraces the path it originally took when being reflected off the target, thus destroying it with devastating accuracy and precision. Even decoying or spoofing attempts are fruitless since the grating pattern only corresponds to the original target. As soon as the device is fired, the whole thing occurs at faster than the speed of light." “That’s impossible!” “Not so. It is essentially a time reverse process, and provided the ‘barrel’ of the weapon is a reduced wave guide, it accelerates the destructive beam to many times faster than the speed of light. Dr. Faro’s research shows that this has been done successfully both in the laboratory and field testing. Furthermore, he has shown how, in the dim, lost past of humanity, such weapons existed on a galactic scale. The so-called air shafts in the King's Chamber of the Great Pyramid, are in fact, reduced waved guides. “There is one drawback to this system as I’ve designed it. It must be operated by its creator or it will not work. This has to do with the subtle scalar signatures of the maker being embedded in the weapon’s encoding system.” “Why didn’t you make it so that anyone could operate it?” “Good question. First of all, that could be catastrophic if it fell into the wrong hands. Secondly, I don’t know how to yet, anyway. It is theoretically possible, but I haven’t figured it out yet. I guess you can say I’m too attached to my work. “Now, instead of using only the visible spectrum of electromagnetic waves, we will add X-ray and gamma-ray components as well, and this mixed beam of electromagnetism will carry acoustic waves as well, tuned to a tone that is disharmonic to the pyramid’s natural frequency. We have to have this device in place and operating before the Death Star is switched on to prevent its destructive harmonic resonance from forming, and keep it on until Daryl’s and Greaves’ teams can take down the operators.” “Can’t the frikkin’ Nazis just re-tune the thing?” “Yes, for example if they changed targets, but there are basic parameters to the resonance they must operate within. Having thoroughly studied the thing, we know what they are and what the basic resonance is they have to tune to for any target. We only need to disrupt that. It's 440 hertz, in case you're interested. “Holy cow, Frank! But if these sorts of weapons can be made in someone’s garage, why don’t we have them?” “Who says we don’t?” “Well take it from us, we worked at the highest level of training and special operations, and I can tell you there is nothing like this in our arsenal.” “Fair enough. But I can tell you that there is. The problem is that deploying such weapons can be devastating on a colossal scale. The slightest mistake can lead to planetary catastrophe. Just look at the asteroid belt. That used to be a planet. Even worse would be for a deployment of such a weapon to lead to an escalation with other powers that have them, terrifying beyond imagination even for the sociopaths who run our governments.” Everyone frowned thoughtfully and whispered awestruck murmurs to one another. “Are we ready?” “You haven’t told us what the wave pool is for. We goin’ for a swim to cool off after the demonstration?” “You’d hardly cool off. The water in that pool is boiling. “Now I want you to look over there. You see that big concrete construction? It’s a resonance chamber. It has similar dimensions to the so-called King’s Chamber in the pyramid. Right now it is emitting a subsonic resonance tuned to the pyramid itself. It is also emitting powerful microwave and x-ray radiation that if we don’t turn off soon, will cook us on the spot like it is the water in that pool. Just joking. The reason the pool is boiling and sloshing is that the resonance chamber is precisely tuned to its structure, contents and location. It took me three days to get everything set up right. When I switch on this machine, it’ll fire a bright optical laser than you can plainly see along with everything else I explained. Instantaneously, the pool should stop sloshing and begin to cool.” Frank scanned the crowd. The crew nodded. A bright red laser touched the concrete and the water in the pool was suddenly still as astonished gasps rose from the assembly, who were unsure of what happened first, the laser hitting the building, or the water going still. Even the most battle-hardened among them were struck silent, and the masters of weirdness, Thorny, One Flare, and Greaves, stammered in awe at what they’d just witnessed. And then: KA-BLAM! The concrete resonance chamber disappeared in a powdery puff as if vaporized in an instant. Everybody’s eyes, including Frank’s, practically popped their eye sockets. The powder wafted gently away downwind, leaving a fine film of debris where once stood the structure. Frank turned sheepishly to his friends and laughed nervously. “Hehehe, ah, that, uh, was just my, ah, 9-11 reenactment. I’ll have to fiddle with the adjustments.” Melissa rushed to his side and put an arm around his waist.
