ICOs or Initial Coin Offerings, as public offerings of new cryptocurrencies to fund start-ups in some way tied to the blockchain world, were an important trend of the year that just ended.
In 2017 the value of ICOs surpassed the value of Venture Capital funding for internet companies. This opens new perspectives for start ups in various fields, especially if regulatory problems related to ICOs. In fact, often ICOs must walk a thin line in creating and managing their tokens, justifying their usage without being subjects to the regulations related to equities or shares. In this field regulation may give clarity and possibly grant the permission for creating simple shares without various tricks, but could also raise the limitations, only time will tell.
It remains the fact that ICOs in 2017, although various ups and downs, granted millions of dollars in funding to innovative companies in various sectors worldwide. In a way similar to crowdfunding but, as we already said, reaching level comparable to the institutional investors. Le ICO, o Initial Coin Offerings, ovvero le offerte pubbliche di nuove cryptovalute per finanziare start up legate in qualche modo al mondo della blockchain, sono state un fenomeno importante dell'anno appena passato.
Nel 2017 il valore delle ICO ha superato il valore fornito dai Venture Capital alle compagnie legate a internet. Un dato importante soprattutto se si nota che, mentre il Venture Capital é spesso concentrato negli USA e in particolare in California, < a href="https://icowatchlist.com/statistics/geo">le ICO sono assai piú diffuse nel mondo. Questo apre nuove prospettive di finanziamento per le start-up in vari campi, soprattutto se si risolveranno i problemi di regolamentazione legati alle ICO. Spesso infatti una ICO deve camminare su una linea sottile nella creazione e nella gestione dei suoi token, giustificando il loro utilizzo senza rientrare nelle regolamentazioni per le equity o le azioni. In questo campo la regolamentazione potrebbe dare chiarezza e magari consentire la creazione di semplici azioni senza vari sotterfugi, ma potrebbe anche aumentare le limitazione, solo il tempo ce lo potrá dire.
Resta il fatto che le ICO nel 2017, seppure con vari alti e bassi, ha fornito milioni di dollari in finanziamenti ad aziende innovative in vari settori e in tutto il mondo. In un modo simile al crowdfunding ma, come giá detto, raggiungendo livelli comparabili a quelli degli investitori istituzionali. Partecipare nelle ICO, sia come fondatore di start up che come investitore, non comporta le limitazioni, legali, geografiche e finanziarie, di investire nei Venture Capitale o nelle OPA. In questo senso, le potenzialità delle ICO sono enormi, e occorrerà, come per la blockchain, una buona regolamentazione per superare l'attuale far west, con le sue truffe e scarsa credibilità, per diffondersi veramente come mezzo di finanziamento. Vorranno i governi cogliere questa opportunità o preferiranno soffocare il potenziale delle ICO per paura che sconvolgano il tradizionale mondo della finanza.
