Hello hivers, I come to share the experiences lived by a group of volunteers (including myself) on the beaches of Cabo de San Antonio, Pinar del Río, Cuba. Here, university students and professors from all over the western part of the country collaborate in the conservation of the valuable ecosystem that develops there and the protection of sea turtles.

Hola hivers vengo a contarles las experiencias vividas por un grupo de voluntarios (me incluyo) en las playas del Cabo de San Antonio, Pinar del Río, Cuba. donde estudiantes y profesores universitarios de todo el Occidente del país colaboran en la conservación del valioso ecosistema que allí se desarrolla y la protección de tortugas marinas.

Everything started a year ago when my best friend Lucian, a programming professor at the university where he studied (and also a hiver), told me about this project. He already knows that I love everything related to nature and its care. He mentioned the primary goal: to monitor and protect sea turtles during their nesting period. It immediately caught my attention, direct contact with such precious animals, count me in. Everything was perfect; he told me about the species that arrive at the beaches of Cabo, described the surrounding nature, challenges and new experiences, etec. Todo inició hace un año cuando mi mejor amigo Lucian, profesor de programación de la universidad en la que estudió (y también hiver) me comentaba acerca de este proyecto, pues él ya sabe que me encanta todo los temas relacionados con la naturaleza y su cuidado . Me comentó del objetivo primordial, vigilar y cuidar a las tortugas marinas en su etapa de desove. Al instante captó mi atención, contacto directo con animales tan preciosos. ¡Me apunto! ! Todo era perfecto, me contó de las especies que llegan a las playas del Cabo, describió la naturaleza qué nos rodea, retos y experiencias nuevas etc.. But not everything is rosy, he said, now I’ll tell you the other side of the coin. It’s 10 DAYS living on the beach in the open air, where you literally survive with just a tank of water and some food provided by the project and the university. There, you’ll experience bad weather, mosquitoes, sandflies, strong sun all day, and we’ll cook with charcoal and the wood we collect that the sea brings to the shore. Do you still want to join? My perception of the adventure had already changed. After thinking about it for a few days, I gave my answer: Of course, I’m going. I don’t want to miss an opportunity like this. We’re going to Cabo! Thus began the countdown until August 10th, the day we would set off on the adventure. We had to get food, medicine, clothes for the occasion, supplies, tools, and a lot of psychological preparation. On the day, we met at the University, the place where the transport that would take us to the location would depart, as it’s 180 km away. There, we met the rest of our group, just 5 people, 5 strangers.

Pero no todo es color de rosa, dijo, ahora te cuento la otra cara de la moneda, son 10 DÍAS viviendo en la playa a la intemperie, donde literalmente sobrevives con sólo un tanque de agua y algunos alimentos que nos brinda el proyecto y la universidad, allí vivirás mal tiempo, mosquitos, jejenes, sol fuerte todo el día y cocinaremos con carbón y la madera que recolectamos que el mar trae hasta la arena, ¿Aún quieres unirte? . Ya había cambiado mi percepción de la aventura que tendríamos, tras pensarlo unos días di mi respuesta: Claro que si voy, no pienso desaprovechar una oportunidad como esta, ¡nos vamos al Cabo! Así comenzaba la cuenta regresiva hasta el 10 de Agosto día que partiremos a la aventura. Tocaba conseguir comida, medicina, ropa para la ocasión, útiles, herramientas y mucha preparación psicológica. Llegado el día nos reunimos en la Universidad, lugar donde saldría el transporte qué nos llevaría al lugar pues son 180 km de ida, allí conocimos al resto de nuestro grupo, solo 5 personas, 5 desconocidos.

The journey started well, with several groups on the bus, as there are various beaches where the work is done. We interacted with some experienced members, researchers, and biologists who have been part of the project for years. About halfway through, in the town of Guane, a municipality in the province of Pinar del Río, the bus suddenly stopped. The driver got off to inspect what had happened and it turned out there was a fuel leak from a small broken hose. We all understood immediately that the problem wouldn’t have a “quick” solution. Some people got off to smoke, others to buy food and snacks in the town, and others of us just watched as the driver fixed the problem under the bus. After an hour, the problem was resolved, and we were able to continue the journey. Three hours later, we arrived at the entrance of the Guanahacabibes Peninsula Biosphere Reserve. Once there, the reserve director welcomed us to the park and then led us to the volunteer reception hall, which is filled with maps and crucial information that a volunteer needs to know. Inside the hall, we received training that included learning about the species, the dangers, and the conditions of the beaches.

El viaje inició bien, iban varios grupos en la guagua, pues son varias las playas donde se hacen las labores, interactuamos con algunos ya experimentados, investigadores y biólogos pertenecientes al proyecto desde hace años. Prácticamente a mitad de camino en el poblado de Guane, municipio que pertenece a la provincia de Pinar del Río la guagua se detuvo de repente. El chófer bajó a inspeccionar qué había ocurrido y resultó ser que había una fuga de combustible por una pequeña manguera rota, todos entendimos al instante que el problema no tendría una “rápida” solución, algunos bajaron a fumar otros a comprar comida y snacks en el pueblo y otros nos limitamos a mirar como el chófer resolvía el problema debajo de la guagua. Transcurrida 1 hora el problema fue resuelto y pudimos continuar el camino 3 horas de viaje más tardes llegamos a la entrada de la Reserva de la Biosfera de la Península de Guanahacabibes. Una vez allí el director de la reserva nos dio la bienvenida al parque para posteriormente darnos entrada al salón de recepción de voluntarios que se encuentra lleno de mapas e información crucial que debe conocer un voluntario. Dentro del salón nos dieron una capacitación que incluye conocer las especies, los peligros y las condiciones de las playas.

As if it were immigration procedures, they asked for our documents and investigated each one of us. The park is very careful about who can and cannot enter due to the history of criminals, hunters, infiltrators, and the possible landing of marijuana, cocaine, or other narcotics by sea. Once the paperwork was completed, we could continue, but before venturing further into the protected reserve, the park management provided us with more food and tools such as a tent, a portable solar panel, turtle registration instruments (forceps, registration sheets, measuring tape, egg counter, pliers, and GPS tags). During the remaining kilometers of the journey, we could observe the change in vegetation, fauna, and typical coastal geological formations, as well as the salty air. When we arrived at the first beach, “El Antonio”, the first group began to be distributed, and so on until we reached our assigned beach, “El Holandes”. There, we started unloading our things and carrying them to the “camp”, which is approximately 200 meters from the road to the beach. There, we met the group we were relieving, who explained the tasks to be done even better, speaking from their most recent experience. Once the bus completed the distribution of groups at each beach, it returned to pick up those being relieved. From that moment on, we were the only ones for several kilometers around, and every minute was crucial for survival. Let’s get to work!

Como si de trámites de inmigración tratara, pidieron nuestros documentos e investigaron a cada uno. El parque es muy cuidadoso con respecto a quien puede y quien no entrar al parque, esto debido al historial de delincuentes, cazadores, infiltrados, además del posible recalo de mariguana, cocaína u otros narcóticos por vía marítima. Una vez culminado el papeleo podríamos continuar pero antes de seguir adentrándonos en la reserva protegida, la dirección del parque nos proveyó más alimentos y herramientas como una casa de campaña, un panel solar portable, los instrumentos de registro de tortugas (forcípula, hojas de registro, cinta de medir, contador de huevos, pinza y presillas gps). Durante los siguientes kilómetros restantes del viaje, pudimos observar el cambio en la vegetación, la fauna y las formaciones geológicas típicas de costa y el aire salino. En cuanto llegamos a la primera playa “El Antonio” comenzó a distribuirse el primer grupo y así sucesivamente hasta que llegamos a la playa qué nos correspondía “El Holandes” allí comenzamos a descargar nuestras cosas y llevarlas hasta el “campamento”, pues son aproximadamente 200 metros desde la carretera hasta la playa. Allí nos encontramos con el grupo a relevar, estos nos explicaron aún mejor las labores a realizar, pues hablaban desde la experiencia más reciente. Una vez que la guagua completa el recorrido de distribución de grupos en cada playa regresa a recoger a los relevados. A partir de ese momento éramos los únicos en varios kilómetros a la redonda y cada minuto era imprescindible para la supervivencia. !Manos a la obra!.
