Les comenté que una de las actividades que hago desde chica es ir a los scouts, pero no les narré nada acerca de ese mundo. Quizás hayan tenido la dicha de probar en los scouts alguna vez, o sino, seguramente se hayan encontrado un scout caminando por allí, alegre y entusiasta, pero no le preguntaron qué hace o por qué se viste así, o por qué camina tan enérgico mientras canta canciones en una lengua extraña. ¿Qué es...

...ser...

...scout?

Personalmente, comencé en los Scouts a los 9 años porque mis amigos de la escuela primaria iban ahí los sábados a la tarde a jugar y aprender cosas relacionadas con la naturaleza. No recuerdo haber recibido invitación de mis compañeros para ir, es una de esas cosas que tus papás arreglan para que vayas porque otros papás comentan y se genera un acuerdo en el que todos llevan a sus hijos y comparten más tiempo juntos.

El primer día solo tengo el recuerdo de estar ya ahí, en el lugar de las actividades, y que nos dijeran que teníamos que *hacer la formación* para izar las banderas. ¿La formación? ¿Qué banderas? Estas y más preguntas surgieron en mi cabeza cuando vi que, al sonar el silbato que indicaba formación, todos los scouts corrían en busca de sus banderines en la casita donde dejábamos las mochilas, y volvían corriendo para colocarse en semicírculo alrededor de un mástil de banderas, y... ¡Empezaron a gritar! Todos a la vez, cada uno con un grupo diferente, gritaban nombres y lemas, se escuchaba un tsunami de ¡Siempre listos!, ¡Siempre mejor! y ¡Servir! que duró 1 minuto y me tomó desprevenida. Y después de todo eso: Silencio. Un gran silencio que se hizo al mismo tiempo que un adulto, parado enfrente de nosotros, levantaba su mano haciendo un saludo - El saludo scout - y miraba con tranquilidad a la ronda.

Estaban sucediendo muchas cosas a la vez, pero yo no podía estar más feliz con ese raro grupo de personas vestidas de uniforme y pañuelo. Ese fue mi comienzo, la primera interacción que tuve con scouts, acompañado de un sentimiento de euforia y alegría al entender que estaba a punto de unirme a un grupo muy especial. 💕

¿Un grupo que baila y hace payasadas en medio de la calle por una prenda que nos tocó?

¿O acaso una familia de corazón que se apoya mutuamente en el progreso personal y las metas de cada uno?

La verdad es que todo eso y muchísimo más, como les comenté en la introducción, el movimiento scout es un espacio de aprendizaje no formal en el que la vida en la naturaleza, el intercambio con otros, y la vivencia constante de experiencias únicas es moneda corriente en cada día que hay de actividad.

Es un movimiento destinado a educar desde juegos y actividades recreativas a personas de todas las edades, donde se aprenden valores como la solidaridad, la honestidad, el trabajo duro en equipos (ya que se organiza por equipos o patrullas) y el servicio por los demás, para crecer como una comunidad que hace del mundo un lugar mejor, y aprende a desenvolverse como miembro de la sociedad, a hablar enfrente de todos, a creer en sí mismo y a trabajar en pos de otros que lo necesitan.

Realizamos campamentos, aprendemos de la naturaleza, las caminatas y las visitas a lugares nuevos y desconocidos nunca faltan (más viviendo en Bariloche, ya que las vistas son increíbles y hay montañas para ver siempre). Nos enseñan nudos, construcciones, cocina rústica, y muchísimas herramientas que nos permiten luego ser independientes y sobrevivir en los campamentos y las actividades de vida en la naturaleza.

Pero ser scout no es solamente vida en la naturaleza, aunque nuestro día a día esté rodeado por ella. Los scouts tenemos una ley, en la que basamos nuestras buenas acciones y la mayoría de valores. Tenemos un lema y un saludo, propios de cada unidad (es decir, dependiendo el grupo etario). En Argentina, los scouts se dividen por edades de la siguiente manera:

- De 7 a 11 años, los chicos forman la ***manada***, donde son nombrados como pequeños lobatos y lobeznas, aprendiendo todo en base al cuento del libro de la selva.

- De 11 a 14 años, se forman en la ***unidad scout***, donde trabajan en patrullas y aprenden nudos, construcciones, se desenvuelven como líderes de sus grupos y dividen tareas dentro de la unidad.

- De 14 a 18 años, los ***caminantes*** comienzan con el trabajo en equipo pero en pos de proyectos y empresas a nivel económico y social, adentrándose en la vida adulta con apoyo de los dirigentes (adultos que coordinan la actividad).

- De 18 a 22 años, la última rama que se forma es la de los ***rovers***, donde se continúa con proyectos y planificaciones pero de forma un poco más seria, en base a las ambiciones y metas personales, y se suele trabajar de forma individual, aunque siempre apoyándose los unos en los otros, y con acompañamiento de los dirigentes.

Siempre que hacemos alguna actividad, o tenemos que presentarnos, o hacen alguna pregunta, solemos responder haciendo el saludo y diciendo nuestro lema, que difiere segun el grupo de edad: La manada realiza su saludo con dos dedos arriba diciendo Siempre mejor! Y el saludo con tres dedos es propio de todas las demas ramas y de los adultos, al igual que el lema Siempre listo! Ademas, en la rama rover solemos decir Siempre listo para servir! donde cambia el agregado del final.

Hay muchísimas cosas más acerca de los scouts, pero seguro dedicaré otra publicación para hablar más de ello, como las costumbres scout, o qué significan los colores de nuestro pañuelo, o acerca de las ceremonias que celebramos en días particulares. Por ahora solo agregar que ser scout es una de las mejores decisiones que tomé en mi vida, y un hermoso lugar para formarse en valores y progresar, donde un montón de gente loca se volvió parte de mis días y estarán toda la vida allí acompañando.💟

El movimiento scout es un espacio de aprendizaje no formal en el que la vida en la naturaleza, el intercambio con otros, y la vivencia constante de experiencias unicas es moneda corriente en cada dia que hay de actividad.

I hope you're all doing great. Today I'm here to tell you a part of my life that I overlooked in the personal introduction. I mentioned that one of the things I've been doing since I was little is going to scouts, but I didn't tell you anything about that world. Maybe you've had the joy of trying out scouts at some point, or if not, you've probably come across a scout walking around, cheerful and enthusiastic, but you didn't ask them what they do or why they dress like that, or why they walk so energetically while singing songs in a strange language. Well, I'm here to answer that question...

I personally started in the Scouts at 9 years old because my friends from primary school went there on Saturday afternoons to play and learn things related to nature. I don't remember receiving an invitation from my classmates to go; it's one of those things your parents arrange for you to go because other parents talk about it and an agreement is reached where everyone takes their children and spends more time together.

On the first day, all I remember is being there, at the activity spot, and being told that we had to "form up" to hoist the flags. "Form up"? What flags? These and more questions popped into my head when I saw that, as soon as the whistle signaling the formation was blown, all the scouts ran to get their pennants from the little house where we left our backpacks, and then they ran back to stand in a semicircle around a flagpole, and... they started shouting! All at once, each with a different group, shouting names and mottos, creating a tsunami of "Be prepared!", "Always better!" and "Serve!" that lasted for 1 minute and caught me off guard. And after all that: Silence. A profound silence that fell at the same time an adult, standing in front of us, raised his hand in a salute - The scout salute - and looked calmly at the group.

Many things were happening at once, but I couldn't be happier with that strange group of people dressed in uniform and scarves. That was my beginning, the first interaction I had with the Scouts, accompanied by a feeling of euphoria and joy as I realized I was about to join a very special group.💕

Or maybe a heartwarming family that supports each other in personal growth and individual objetives?

The truth is that all that and much more, as I mentioned in the introduction, the scout movement is a space of non-formal learning where life in nature, interaction with others, and the constant experience of unique experiences are common currency in each day of activity.

It's a movement aimed at educating people of all ages through games and recreational activities, where values like solidarity, honesty, hard work in teams (as it's organized by teams or patrols), and serving others are learned to grow as a community that makes the world a better place, and learns to function as a member of society, to speak in front of everyone, to believe in oneself, and to work for others in need.

We go camping, learn from nature, and never miss out on hikes and visits to new and unknown places (especially living in Bariloche, where the views are incredible and there are always mountains to see). They teach us knots, building, rustic cooking, and many tools that later allow us to be independent and survive in camps and nature-based activities..

But being a scout is not just about life in nature, even though our daily lives are surrounded by it. Scouts have a law that guides our good actions and most of our values. We have a motto and a greeting specific to each unit (depending on the age group). - From 7 to 11 years old, kids form the "manada", where they are named as little wolf cubs and she-wolf cubs, learning everything based on the tale of The Jungle Book.

- From 11 to 14 years old, they form the "scout unit", where they work in patrols, learn knots, building, develop as leaders of their groups, and divide tasks within the unit.

- From 14 to 18 years old, the "pathfinders" begin working in teams but towards projects and ventures at an economic and social level, delving into adulthood with the support of the leaders (adults who coordinate the activity).

- From 18 to 22 years old, the last branch that is formed is that of the "rovers", where they continue with projects and planning but in a slightly more serious way, based on personal ambitions and goals. They usually work individually, although always supporting each other, and with the guidance of the leaders.

Whenever we do an activity, introduce ourselves, or are asked a question, we usually respond by doing the greeting and saying our motto, which varies depending on the age group: The pack performs their greeting with two fingers up saying "Always better!" The greeting with three fingers is used by all other branches and adults, along with the motto "Be prepared!" Additionally, in the rover branch, we usually say "Always ready to serve!" where the final addition changes.

There are so many more things about scouts, but I'll definitely dedicate another post to talk more about it, like scout customs, or what the colors of our scarf mean, or about the ceremonies we celebrate on special days. For now, I'll just add that being a scout is one of the best decisions I made in my life, and a beautiful place to develop in values and progress, where a bunch of crazy people became part of my days and will be there for life accompanying me..💟
