Once again, I am behind on garden updates so here's one for the month of May! Peas

I am always fascinated by nature and how a simple seed can turn into produce so fast! This 'before' photo was taken on May 4th and one month later we are already harvesting peas and storing it in the freezer for months to come. Every few days we do a harvest of what's ready and I think we have a couple more rounds before it's done. Clearing up pea pods and collecting peas is my favorite garden related activity so I am gladly helping my parents with this task.

Potatoes

My dad is eager to see if potatoes are ready! New potatoes are some of our favorite things, especially when they are roasted! There's nothing better than freshly pulled potatoes from the ground and prepared right away. Of course, a big portion of these will be harvested later and stored.

Onion and garlic

My mom always dedicates rows of onions for eating and for the final harvest, this way we have a lot of spring onions that we enjoyed at the beginning of Spring and the rest is left to grow into yellow and purple onions as well as garlic. Since my mom makes home cooked meals every day, onions are a staple for her, like any other household that makes food at home, it's a must have all year round so the more we can harvest and store - the better. Of course, there comes a time when things get used up and have to be bought but it's still nice to have your own home-grown stash for a while.

Raspberries

Strawberry season is coming to an end but raspberry season just started! It's interesting to see how the cycle of one fruit/veggie is closing while other is starting. Every year since we have raspberries, there are some seedlings so what started as one row with four plants slowly grew every year and this year my dad added another row so I can come and harvest some for me and my husband which is really nice. I am also planning to come and help my mom with harvest so she can store some in the freezer - these are great for cakes and we always use them during colder months when garden is taking a winter break.

Nectarines

Last year was the first time this nectarine tree gave us some fruit - I think there was 3-4 in total. This year there's more and I hope it will achieve the full ripeness. The tree is still quite small and young and I hope it will have more fruit as years goes by.

Tomatoes

It's been few years now since my parents are pre-planting tomatoes and peppers (mostly bell peppers and a little bit of spicy ones) and it seems to work great so far. It's been 10 days since the second tomato photo was taken so they are even bigger now. There's also some cherry tomatoes which are my favorite and I cannot wait to eat them!

Zucchini is something that always grows like crazy in this garden! My mom always plants the white one as it's kind of hard to find green zucchini seeds but I am really curious to see if green zucchini would also grow like this so I'll try to find some for next season. Once I tried a white zucchini sauce at my friend's place and I really liked it so I'll try to make it myself now that we can already harvest some.

Plums are having a great season! There's maybe ten plum trees in total but not every one of them has this much fruit. Here in Serbia we have a national alcohol drink called 'rakija' (rakiya) that can be made with different fruit including plums. So my dad will probably make that while my mom might make some plum jam. Again, I'll try to go help them with collecting plums once they start falling out of the trees.

Chokeberry was bought few years ago and it was kind of a 'trial and error' thing same as blueberry. Unfortunately, blueberry was a fail (this year I ordered one and it seems like it's going to be a success so I'll have to take a photo of it and share) but two chokeberry bushes are doing great and they are giving a lot of berries. I'll definitely have to eat more of them even though they are a little bit sour but apparently they are super healthy!

Another fruit that is doing really well is pear! The photo doesn't do it justice - there's so many of them. For some reason I don't usually reach for pears, I don't know why since they are so tasty and juicy and I should definitely take advantage of this abundance.

Here are some grapes, a very popular fruit in my family! When my brother visits from abroad with his kids, they also enjoy picking and eating grapes. My husband planted grape wines long time ago and now we also have a bunch, enough to feed everyone's cravings, lol.

That's all for May update, I always say I'll try to make these posts regularly but somehow time always goes by so fast and when I look at the last time I made a post, it's already been weeks or even months.
