Plot

The anime begins by showing us a young girl with grayish-white hair and eyes of different colors waking up in an unfamiliar room, dressed as a maid. As she gets out of bed, feeling a bit disoriented, she takes her time to think and assess the situation. Then, she leaves the room and encounters other girls dressed just like her; some are even afraid to be there. On the other hand, others say they’re there because they want to be, for the prize at the end of this “deadly game”—something our protagonist, Yuki, also hopes to win. Although, in reality, her original intention is to play 99 deadly games and thus break her mentor’s “record.”

I’m warning you up front that this anime is NOT for everyone. This is mainly due to its dark tone, its rather slow pace, and its plot, which can be a bit complicated to follow. If you haven’t watched enough anime or if you prefer the typical generic action, fantasy, and comedy anime that are popular these days, then this anime isn’t for you. On the other hand, if you’re a big fan of psychological suspense, mystery, and drama, then you might like it—even if you find the pace a bit frustrating. Yes, the pace of this series is that slow, and many people have stopped watching it for that very reason. In other words, if you have an open mind and tastes that go beyond what’s generic and popular these days, you might end up enjoying this anime series. Even its audiovisual style might strike you as interesting or even fascinating, since it’s very different from what we’re used to seeing in the vast majority of Asian animations. But we’ll talk more about that later; first, I want to mention what this anime is actually about and what it was that I came to like about it. To start with, the first, unforgettable episode—which runs for almost an hour—is what completely hooked me.

De antemano les vengo avisando ya que este anime NO es para todo el mundo. Esto se debe mayormente a su tono oscuro, su ritmo bastante lento y su trama un tanto complicada de seguir. Si eres una persona que no ha visto suficientes animes o que sus gustos son ver los típicos animes de acción con fantasía y comedia genéricos que hay ahora, entonces este anime no es para tí. En cambio, si eres un gran fan del suspenso psicológico, el misterio y el drama entonces puede que te guste, aunque su ritmo te parezca un poco exasperante. Sí, el ritmo que tiene esta obra es así de lento y muchos han dejado de verla por eso. Entre otras palabras, si tienes una mente abierta y gustos más allá de lo genérico y popular de la época actual, puede que llegues a disfrutar de esta serie animada. That cold, unsettling tone, that slow yet atmospheric pacing, that highly original animation and audiovisual production, and that fascinating plot—that’s what kept me hooked from start to finish. In just one episode—nearly an hour long—I knew this anime would be a marvel, both visually and narratively, as well as psychologically. Everything shown in this episode gives us the impression that we’re watching a unique take on the typical “death games” that fans of the genre are already familiar with, but with a more dystopian and bleak style. A future where humanity entertains itself by watching death games like this one on television. It might remind you of a popular series from the same Asian continent, such as Squid Game. But this is different—it’s much darker and more unsettling because of the way the participants are treated and portrayed. I’m not going to comment on the curious choice to have only young women participating in all these games. I’ll just say that I’m really struck by how these games work and how they manage to replace the gory, adult-oriented tone with some pretty interesting elements and resources. It’s ironic that there’s censorship within this very same deadly and exclusive game.

Ese tono frío e inquietante, ese ritmo lento, pero bien ambientado, esa animación y producción audiovisual tan original y esa trama tan fascinante es lo que me enganchó de principio a fin. En solo un episodio -de casi una hora- supe que este anime sería una maravilla tanto audiovisual como narrativa y psicológica. Todo lo que nos muestra en este episodio nos da la idea parcial de estar viendo una versión única de los típicos “juegos mortales” que los amantes del género conocemos ya, pero con un estilo más distópico y desolador. Un futuro donde la humanidad se entretiene viendo juegos mortales como éste en la televisión. Tal vez les suene alguna serie popular del mismo continente asiático como lo es El Jugo del Calamar. Pero esto es diferente, es mucho más oscuro y más inquietante debido a la forma en la que tratan y nos presentan a los participantes. No voy a opinar nada de la curiosa elección de que sean puras mujeres y jóvenes las que siempre participan en todos estos juegos. Solo diré que me llama mucho la atención cómo funcionan dichos juegos y cómo hacen para sustituir el tono sangriento y para adultos con sustancias y recursos bastante interesantes. Es irónico que haya censura dentro de este mismo juego mortal y exclusivo.

The curious thing here is that, as the episodes unfold, we see that our protagonist, Yuki, aims to complete 99 rounds of these deadly games. The reason for this? Personally, I don’t even know the full story myself, since the series itself shows Yuki at different stages and in various deadly games where her perception of herself and of reality becomes distorted, sometimes even causing her to doubt why she’s there at all.

La organización que dirige y transmite estos juegos mortales en este mundo distópico utilizan al parecer una sustancia líquida en los cuerpos de las participantes que hacen que, al estar en contacto con el aire, esta se convierte en algo parecido al algodón. Lo interesante es que dicha sustancia se mezcla con la sangre y es por eso que no vemos sangre derramada, sino partes del cuerpo con relleno. Pero bueno, el objetivo principal de este juego es conseguir que una participante gane y se lleve un premio en “metálico” para así vivir “tranquila” por un buen tiempo. Lo curioso aquí es que, con el paso de los siguientes episodios, vemos que nuestra protagonista, Yuki, tiene como objetivo completar 99 partidas de estos juegos mortales. ¿La razón de esto? Personalmente ni yo lo sé en su totalidad ya que la misma serie nos muestra a Yuki en diferentes etapas y juegos mortales donde su percepción de sí misma y de la realidad llega incluso a alterarse, dudando incluso a veces de su razón de estar ahí.

The coldest thing about this character is that we almost never see her shed a tear or show any emotion or feeling over a loss.

He aquí la razón del nombre que lleva este anime, lo cual es irónico, pero también muy desalentador a la vez. Vemos con esto que no es una historia típica con un final feliz ni nada de eso. Estamos hablando de un mundo distópico donde la única esperanza de vivir tranquilo es afrontando juegos mortales que te pueden quitar la vida en cualquier momento y de manera bastante creativa, si no logras completarlos. Por otro lado, Yuki es también un caso especial ya que no es la típica protagonista inocente e inútil que vemos en la mayoría de obras de suspenso y acción. En el primer episodio que les había mencionado arriba vemos que es más que una simple veterana de estos juegos mortales. Si bien llega a asumir cierto papel de ser buena gente, compasiva y amable con las demás, en realidad es alguien que incluso puede acabar con la vida de los demás con tal de seguir adelante y completar el juego. Lo más frío de este personaje es que casi nunca la vemos derramar una lágrima o demostrar cierto sentimiento o emoción por alguna pérdida.

In just 11 episodes, we get to enjoy a mix of suspense, drama, some action, and psychological tension that I find quite fascinating. Not just because of the plot itself, but rather because of the way we’re introduced to certain secondary characters who, over time, become significant to the story. Among the most notable is Yuki’s mentor, Hakushi, whom we meet in the episodes of the arc I mentioned above.

También debemos de tener en cuenta que el anime posee también un ritmo narrativo bastante inconsistente. A veces vemos lo que parece ser el presente, pero luego apenas nos damos cuenta de que nos están mostrando eventos del pasado en forma de episodios. Sin embargo, creo que esto solo ocurre una o dos veces en este anime, como lo es con el inolvidable arco de los Conejos y los Tocones, por ejemplo. También, como pudieron suponer, la historia también posee ciertos saltos en el tiempo ya que obviamente no veremos todos los 44 juegos mortales en los que participa Yuki. No sé si la obra original está completa o no, pero me gustaría ver cómo termina luego de ver la película que sacaron como secuela directa de este anime que se emitió a principios de este año. Con apenas 11 capítulos podemos disfrutar de una secuencia de suspenso, drama, algo de acción y tensión psicológica que me fascina bastante. No solo por la trama como tal, sino más bien por la manera en la que nos introducen a algunos personajes secundarios que, con el tiempo, llegan a ser relevantes en la historia. Entre los más destacados tenemos a la mentora de Yuki, Hakushi, quien la conocemos en los episodios del arco que les mencioné arriba.

It’s only natural that people like Kyara exist when we consider that there’s an entire society that produces and broadcasts these kinds of “games” on screen as a form of entertainment for millionaires and the powerful. I think this is where we can see one of the darkest and most profound messages in this anime: humanity’s uncertain future lies in our lack of empathy and emotion toward others.

En dichos episodios no solo conocemos a quien le enseñó todo lo que sabe a nuestra protagonista, sino que también vemos a uno que otro personaje que logra destacarse muy bien. Claro, en este anime la mayoría de personajes secundarios siempre consiguen darnos un patrón de ser gente competitiva, con problemas de autoestima o con algún deseo de superioridad. La mayoría llegan apenas a influenciar o dejarnos cierta huella en la trama o en nuestra protagonista. O eso pensamos hasta que aparece Kyara que es simplemente una lunática y sádica asesina. Su introducción es excelente, con uno que otro episodio donde se habla de ella como un ejemplo a seguir. Pero luego de verla en acción a primera plana descubrimos que no es cualquier personaje, es simplemente la representación propia del mal que existe en este mundo distópico y carente de emociones. Es normal que gente como Kyara exista si vemos que hay toda una sociedad que produce y transmite este tipo de “juegos” en la pantalla como medio de entretenimiento para millonarios y gente poderosa. Creo que aquí podemos notar uno de los mensajes más oscuros y profundos que tiene este anime: el futuro incierto de la humanidad radica en la falta de empatía y emoción por los demás.

The color palette is mostly vibrant and varies widely between pastel, cool, and dark tones. The use of light and shadow is excellent as well. The sound effects are no slouch either, but the soundtrack truly hits the mark by creating moments of tension and anxiety. This anime may lack the pacing that many consider “normal” or the fluidity and level of detail that many expect to see in other contemporary anime. But all of this is offset by an excellent and creative way of recreating and illustrating everything our characters experience and face in each of these games. It doesn’t aim to give us spectacular shots; it simply seeks to make us doubt even what we’re seeing and whether what our protagonist does at times is right or wrong. It also has some great plot twists and moments that can even blow your mind. It’s an anime I recommend only to those who are willing to appreciate such a high level of artistry in a work. Personally, I give it a well-deserved 9/10 rating in the psychological thriller, drama, and action genres.

El director a cargo de esta adaptación decidió utilizar recursos visuales, estilos de dibujo y planos fijos y lejanos a la vista de los personajes para generar una sensación de estar viendo una obra teatral de antaño. Los detalles son sustituídos por planos que encierran a la protagonista y los demás personajes en una habitación o un entorno en el que tienen que escapar. Al momento de mostrarnos planos gráficos, el anime no se queda corto ni perezoso, lo que ocurre también con ciertos momentos de alta tensión o desenlaces y enfrentamientos que son de lo mejor. La paleta de colores son mayormente brillantes y varían mucho entre tonos pasteles, fríos y oscuros. El uso de luces y sombras es excelente también. Los efectos de sonido tampoco se quedan atrás, pero la banda sonora logra su objetivo dándonos momentos de tensión y ansiedad. Este anime puede que llegue a carecer de tener un ritmo que muchos consideran “normal” o de una fluidez y nivel de detalles que muchos esperan ver en cualquier otro anime actual. Pero todo esto es sustituído por una excelente y creativa manera de recrear e ilustrar todo lo que viven y afrontan nuestros personajes en cada uno de estos juegos. No busca darnos planos espectaculares, solo busca que dudamos incluso de lo que estamos viendo y de si es correcto o no lo que hace nuestra protagonista a veces. También tiene muy buenos giros de trama y momentos que te pueden hasta volar la cabeza. Es un anime que recomiendo solo a aquellos que están dispuestos a soportar tal nivel de maestría en una obra. Personalmente, le doy una calificación merecida de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de suspenso psicológico, drama y acción.
