Olá pessoal, já faz tempo que eu estava querendo postar aqui sobre uma das minhas paixões e hoje finalmente consegui. A capoeira pra mim é muito mais que uma atividade física, é uma oportunidade de me conectar com minha cultura e também de desenvolver diversas habilidades através da música, além de ser uma ótima maneira de se fazer amigos.

Para quem não sabe do que eu estou falando, capoeira é uma arte marcial brasileira desenvolvida pelas pessoas escravizadas na época do Brasil colônia como um meio para lutar pela sua liberdade. Para que os senhores de escravos não percebessem que eles estavam praticando uma luta, os escravizados adicionaram música aos seus treinos, assim, as pessoas que viam achavam que eles estavam apenas cantando e dançando. Ainda hoje a capoeira é conhecida como a luta disfarçada de dança.

Eu havia tentado praticar capoeira algumas vezes quando ainda morava no Brasil, mas nunca consegui manter a rotina de treinos. Foi somente quando me mudei para a Australia que consegui adicionar a capoeira no meu dia a dia. Talvez pelo ritmo de vida que eu tenho aqui (que é bastante tranquilo) ou pela facilidade de encontrar grupos de capoeira com os quais eu me sentia confortável, o fato é que desde que vim pra Australia, a capoeira tem sido uma constante na minha vida.

Uma das primeiras coisas que me chamou a atenção na capoeira foi a música. Desde criança eu ficava fascinada pelos sons dos instrumentos e pela maneira de cantar. A capoeira tem 3 instrumentos principais que são o atabaque (um tipo de tambor), o pandeiro e o berimbau (que é um instrumento específico da capoeira). O meu favorito é de longe o atabaque, eu simplesmente amo o som que ele produz. Quando escuto o som de um atabaque parece que meu corpo todo vibra na mesma frequência das batidas dele. Claro que ele foi o primeiro instrumento que aprendi a tocar na capoeira.

Por mais que eu ame tocar o atabaque, um capoeirista não está completo se não sabe tocar o berimbau, que é o principal instrumento. Então eu coloquei como meta para esse ano aprender a tocar esse instrumento que para mim sempre foi um desafio. Apesar de ser um instrumento que aparenta ser simples, ele é extremamente complexo para tocar. Para começar, a pessoa precisa equilibrar todo o peso dele no dedo mindinho, e existem alguns bem pesados. O segundo desafio que pra mim tem sido bem difícil de superar, é conseguir fazer as notas. As 3 notas que se fazem no berimbau são conseguidas através da combinação do toque da vareta no arame com a pressão da pedra. A parte de equilibrar o berimbau já estou conseguindo razoavelmente bem. Agora é praticar e praticar para conseguir fazer as notas corretamente. Quando eu me sentir um pouco mais confiante eu vou postar um vídeo aqui tocando o berimbau.

Hello everyone, I have wanted to post here about one of my passions for a while and today I finally got to do it. Capoeira for me is much more than a physical activity, it is an opportunity to connect with my culture and also to develop many skills through the music, besides being a great way to make friends.

For those who don’t know what I’m talking about, capoeira is a Brazilian martial art developed by the enslaved people at the time of the colonization of Brazil, as a way to fight for their freedom. In order to prevent the slave owners of knowing that they were practicing a fight, the enslaved people added music to their training, this way, people that saw it thought that they were just singing and dancing. Capoeira is still known as a fight disguised as a dance nowadays.

I had tried to practice capoeira a few times while still living in Brazil, but I could never maintain the training routine. It was only when I moved to Australia that I got to add capoeira to my weekly schedule. Maybe it’s because of the rhythm of my life here (very laid-back) or by how easy it was to find a capoeira group that I felt comfortable with, the fact is that since I came to Australia, capoeira has been a constant in my life.

One of the first things that caught my attention in capoeira was the music. Since I was a kid I was fascinated by the sounds of the instruments and by the way they sang. Capoeira has 3 main instruments that are atabaque (a type of drum), pandeiro (tambourine) and berimbau (a instrument specific for capoeira). My favourite one by far is the atabaque, I love the sound it makes. When I listen to the sound of the atabaque it feels like my whole body vibrates to the same frequency of its beats. Of course it was the first instrument that I learned to play in capoeira.

As much as I love to play the atabaque, a capoeirista is not complete if they don’t know how to play the berimbau, that is the main instrument. So I set as my goal for this year to learn how to play this instrument that has always been a big challenge for me. Despite it being an instrument that look very simple, it is extremely complex to play. To begin with, the person needs to balance the whole weight of it on the pinkie finger, and there are some that are quite heavy. The second challenge, which for me has been very difficult to overcome, is to play the notes properly. The 3 notes that are possible to play on the berimbau are achieved by the combination of the touch of the stick to the wire and the pressure applied by the rock on the wire. The part of balancing the berimbau on my finger I’m progressing reasonably well. Now is to practice more and more to be able to play the notes correctly. When I feel a bit more confident I will post a video of me playing the berimbau.
