Hola a toda la comunidad de Creative Papercraft. Es un gusto estar nuevamente con ustedes. Hoy les traigo un proyecto que nace de una historia familiar muy especial.

Les cuento que hace unos días, en una reunión familiar, surgió una conversación, en la cual hablábamos de nuestros pequeños que culminaron su etapa inicial de estudios, y mi sobrino mencionó con cierta nostalgia que no conserva ninguna foto de cuando él vivió ese momento. No le dije nada en ese instante, pero yo sí guardo una imagen de aquel día tan especial.

Así que decidí hacerle un regalo con doble propósito: entregarle esa fotografía que él no sabe que existe y a la vez, se me ocurrió acompañarla con un portarretrato hecho a mano. Donde el papel se convierte en el adorno estrella. Es un detalle sencillo, pero lleno de mucho cariño, para que él, pueda compartir ese recuerdo con su pequeña hija.

Hello to the entire Creative Papercraft community. It's a pleasure to be with you again. Today I bring you a project that stems from a very special family story.

I'll tell you that a few days ago, at a family gathering, a conversation arose in which we talked about our little ones who had finished their early education, and my nephew mentioned with some nostalgia that he didn't have any photos of that moment. I didn't say anything at the time, but I do have a picture of that special day.

So I decided to give him a gift with a dual purpose: to give him that photograph that he doesn't know exists and, at the same time, I thought of accompanying it with a handmade picture frame. Where the paper becomes the star decoration. It's a simple gesture, but full of love, so that he can share that memory with his little daughter.

Join me step by step as I give those unforgettable memories a second life.

Para comenzar, trazo y corto con el cúter un rectángulo de 22 cm de alto por 17 cm de ancho sobre cartón gris o cartón compacto. Luego corto tres tiras: Dos tiras de 16 cm de largo por 1 cm de ancho y una tira de 12 cm de alto por 1 cm de ancho.

Una vez listas, procedo a pintarlas. Las tiras las pinto todas en color rojo. Y la pieza más grande la pinto por una cara completamente en rojo, incluyendo los bordes. Y en la otra cara, aplico pintura negra como fondo, y enmarco con un borde rojo de 2 cm de grosor por cada lado.

To begin, I draw and cut a rectangle measuring 22 cm high by 17 cm wide on gray cardboard or compact cardboard with a utility knife. Then I cut three strips: two strips measuring 16 cm long by 1 cm wide and one strip measuring 12 cm high by 1 cm wide.

Once they are ready, I proceed to paint them. I paint all the strips red. I paint one side of the largest piece completely red, including the edges. On the other side, I apply black paint as a background and frame it with a 2 cm thick red border on each side.

Es el turno de la pieza frontal es decir el marco visible del portarretrato. Para ello, trazo y corto otro rectángulo de 22 cm de largo por 17 cm de ancho, igual al anterior, pero esta vez le doy un grosor de 2,5 cm por cada lado, formando así la ventana central donde irá la foto.

En esta ocasión forrare la pieza usando la hoja de papel tipo carta en color rojo. Aplico pega sobre la pieza y la ubico en el centro de la hoja, me aseguro de que quede bien adherida, sin burbujas de aire. Para lograr un acabado limpio, hago pequeños cortes en las esquinas, retiro el papel sobrante y, en el centro, realizo un corte en forma de “X”. Con mucho cuidado, doblo y pego los bordes hacia adentro.

Now it's time for the front piece, i.e., the visible frame of the picture frame. To do this, I draw and cut another rectangle measuring 22 cm long by 17 cm wide, the same as the previous one, but this time I give it a thickness of 2.5 cm on each side, thus forming the central window where the photo will go.

This time, I will cover the piece using red letter-sized paper. I apply glue to the piece and place it in the center of the sheet, making sure it is well adhered, without any air bubbles. To achieve a clean finish, I make small cuts in the corners, remove the excess paper, and make an “X” shaped cut in the center. Very carefully, I fold and glue the edges inward.

Con todas las piezas listas, llegó el momento de armar nuestro portarretrato. Lo primero, pego las dos tiras de 16 cm en la parte trasera de la pieza frontal, una a cada lado Luego, pego la tira de 12 cm de forma horizontal en la parte baja, también por detrás. Ahora uno la pieza frontal con la base, asegurándome de que quede bien alineada. Verifico que haya una pequeña abertura en la parte superior, que es por donde introduciré la foto. Y listo ya esta el marco.

With all the pieces ready, it's time to assemble our picture frame. First, I glue the two 16 cm strips to the back of the front piece, one on each side. Then, I glue the 12 cm strip horizontally to the bottom, also on the back. Now I attach the front piece to the base, making sure it is properly aligned. I check that there is a small opening at the top, which is where I will insert the photo. And that's it, the frame is ready.

Ahora voy a realizar el adorno que hará único y especial nuestro portarretrato. Una hoja de palma. Y como en Creative Papercraft el papel es protagonista, esta pieza será elaborada con papel cartón reciclado. Así que tomo un trozo de cartón y, con ayuda de un pañito húmedo, paso suavemente por la superficie. Despego la primera capa de papel, que es la que voy a trabajar. Este tipo de papel tiene una textura, perfecta para realizar nuestra hoja decorativa.

Now I'm going to make the decoration that will make our picture frame unique and special. A palm leaf. And since paper is the star of Creative Papercraft, this piece will be made from recycled cardboard. So I take a piece of cardboard and, with the help of a damp cloth, gently wipe the surface. I peel off the first layer of paper, which is the one I'm going to work with. This type of paper has a texture that is perfect for making our decorative leaf.

Comiezo con lo que sera el tallo. Trazo y corto una tira de papel de 15,8 cm de largo por 1,4 cm de ancho. Doblo la tira a lo largo por la mitad, formando una línea central que me sirve de guía. Seguidamente marco separaciones de 0,8 cm cada una, hasta tener 15 secciones. Luego Pego la tira y dejo 3,5 cm sin pegar en lo que será la parte baja.

I start with what will be the stem. I draw and cut a strip of paper 15.8 cm long by 1.4 cm wide. I fold the strip in half lengthwise, forming a center line that serves as a guide. Terminado el tallo, sigo con las hojas. Corto 15 trozos de papel de 5,3 cm de largo por 2,7 cm de ancho. Comienzo con la hoja guía. Tomo uno de los trocitos de papel y lo doblo a lo largo por la mitad, formando un primer pliegue central. Doblo cada extremo hacia ese pliegue del centro, como si abrazaran la línea. Así obtengo tres pliegues en total, creando un efecto tipo acordeón. Luego corto por el pliegue del medio, separando la pieza en dos partes

Once the stem is finished, I continue with the leaves. I cut 15 pieces of paper measuring 5.3 cm long by 2.7 cm wide. I start with the guide leaf. I take one of the pieces of paper and fold it in half lengthwise, forming a first central fold. I fold each end toward that center fold, as if they were hugging the line. This gives me three folds in total, creating an accordion-like effect. Then I cut along the middle fold, separating the piece into two parts.

Es el turno de darle forma de hoja. Tomo una de las piezas ya cortadas y, en uno de sus extremos, realizo un corte en forma de punta. La abro y le aplico pegamento en el interior. Para luego posicionarla en la primera marca del tallo procurando que los extremos queden al frente.

Now it's time to shape it into a leaf. I take one of the pieces I've already cut and make a pointed cut at one end. I open it up and apply glue to the inside. Then I position it on the first mark on the stem, making sure that the ends are at the front.

Ya solo queda terminar las 14 hojas restante para completar la pieza. A cada uno de los trocitos de papel le aplico el mismo procedimiento tipo acordeón, que hice para la hoja guía con la gran variante que al momento de cortar por la línea central, dejo 0,5 cm sin cortar al final, lo que mantiene las piezas unidas. Le doy igualmente a cada una de las partes la forma de punta , abro la pieza aplico pegamento y pego siguiendo los pliegues establecidos. Finalmente despliego y cada puntita debe quedar hacia afuera. Este mismo proceso lo aplico en todas.

Now all that remains is to finish the remaining 14 sheets to complete the piece. I apply the same accordion-like procedure to each of the pieces of paper that I did for the guide sheet, with the major difference that when cutting along the center line, I leave 0.5 cm uncut at the end, which keeps the pieces together. I also shape each of the pieces into a point, open the piece, apply glue, and stick it down following the established folds. Finally, I unfold it, and each point should be facing outwards. I apply this same process to all of them.

Cuando ya estén seca las 14 piezas. Solo queda armarla en el tallo. Aplico pegamento y las voy pegando de manera que cada lado encaje en el tallo siguiendo las marquitas que hice previamente. Es muy importante tener en cuenta que, las puntas deben quedar hacia afuera. Finalmente, con ayuda de los dedos, abro cuidadosamente cada hoja, dándole así volumen.

Once the 14 pieces are dry, all that remains is to assemble them on the stem. I apply glue and stick them on so that each side fits onto the stem, following the marks I made previously. It is very important to bear in mind that the tips should face outwards. Finally, using my fingers, I carefully open each leaf, giving it volume.

Para la parte baja de la hoja. Corte con la misma forma afilada. Luego, con la ayuda de un pincel, un lápiz o cualquier objeto redondo, le doy una ligera curvatura, presionando suavemente. Y así, queda lista la hoja.

For the lower part of the leaf, cut with the same sharp shape. Then, using a brush, pencil, or any round object, gently press down to give it a slight curve. And that's it, the leaf is ready.
