Creo que es el animal que tiene más nombres, al menos acá, en Venezuela, se le llama, cochino, cerdo, marrano, puerco, chancho, y cuando tiene poco tiempo de nacido, lechón. De niña vivía en el campo, éramos doce hermanos y había qué trabajar muy duro. Una de las tareas que me tocaban a mí era mantener los cochinos limpios, darles de comer, limpiarles el chiquero, ocuparme totalmente de ellos, pues. Tarea que detestaba. Recuerdo que una vez a la hora en que me tocaba ir a atenderlos exclamé con disgusto : "¡Qué fastidio, ojalá se murieran esos cochinos para no tener que estar limpiando chiquero!" Mi familia me escuchó decir esto... y parece ser que por allá arriba también lo oyeron y algún ángel dijo "amén" porque cuando llegué al chiquero vi que de los siete u ocho cochinos que tenía mi papa ¡Tres estaban muertos! Aterrada salí corriendo y me escondí en el monte hasta que llegó la noche y me vi obligada a regresar. Me metí bajo el fogón llora y llora y de allí me sacaron a palo limpio. Recuerdo que yo repetía una y otra vez: “Yo no los maté, yo no los envenené, busquen un doctor que los examine para que vean que yo no los maté” Fue una paliza memorable, una de las peores que recibí de niña. Recordando ahora ese suceso, creo que cuando sospechamos algo malo de alguien, no debemos darlo por seguro. Debemos dejar un margen amplio para la duda. Tal vez lo mejor sea sospechar siempre la inocencia del otro en vez de sospechar su culpabilidad.

As a child I lived in the countryside, we were twelve siblings and we had to work very hard. One of the tasks that fell to me was to keep the pigs clean, feed them, clean their pigsty, take care of them completely, well. Task I hated. I remember that once, when it was time for me to go take care of them, I exclaimed with disgust: "How annoying, I wish those pigs would die so I wouldn't have to clean the pigsty!" My family heard me say this... and it seems that up there they also heard it and some angel said "amen" because when I got to the pigsty I saw that of the seven or eight pigs that my dad had, three were dead! Terrified, I ran away and hid in the mountains until night came and I was forced to return. I went under the stove, crying and crying, and from there they took me out with a stick. I remember that I repeated over and over again: “I didn't kill them, I didn't poison them, look for a doctor to examine them so you can see that I didn't kill them.” It was a memorable beating, one of the worst I received as a child. Remembering that event now, I believe that when we suspect something bad about someone, we should not take it for granted. We must leave a wide margin for doubt. Perhaps it is best to always suspect the innocence of the other rather than their guilt.
