Work life: 3 lessons learned in talent selection ---

Durante el último mes he disfrutado muchísimo compartir con ustedes una publicación semanal sobre las vivencias y lecciones que me ha dejado mi camino profesional y que suma a mi crecimiento personal. Al final, el trabajo ocupa gran parte de nuestra vida, y claro que nos deja aprendizajes valiosos. Hoy me encantaría contarles 3 aspectos claves que he aprendido al participar en procesos de selección de personas (especialmente en actividades formativas con cupos limitados). Este rol me encanta porque me ha permitido crecer muchísimo, tanto en lo personal como en lo profesional. Aclaro que no me dedico al reclutamiento de personal. Mi labor ha sido más bien apoyar a construir y promover oportunidades en formaciones. En esos procesos de convocatoria y selección (analizando formularios y haciendo entrevistas), me he dado cuenta de que lo que decimos y cómo lo decimos es importantísimo. Define si estamos generando un ambiente de buen trato, inclusión, respeto, comodidad y seguridad... o todo lo contrario. Para quienes coordinan y dirigen una sesión de entrevistas (y esto aplica para todo), es crucial enfocarse en la humanización del proceso, la empatía, la tolerancia, el control de estrategias ante imprevistos y el manejo de emociones. Después de todo, las relaciones humanas son complejas, y en cada comunicación siempre aprendemos algo nuevo. Las reflexiones que les comparto hoy vienen desde mi experiencia como gestora de la entrevista. Ahora sí, vamos a iniciar... Primero una pausa con una taza de chocolate y torta.

Today, I would love to share with you three key aspects I have learned from participating in recruitment processes (especially in training activities with limited spots). I love this role because it has allowed me to grow tremendously, both personally and professionally. I should clarify that I am not involved in personnel recruitment. My job has been more about supporting the creation and promotion of training opportunities. In these application and selection processes (analyzing forms and conducting interviews), I have realized that what we say and how we say it is extremely important. It determines whether we are creating an atmosphere of kindness, inclusion, respect, comfort, and safety... or the opposite. For those who coordinate and lead an interview session (and this applies to everything!), it is crucial to focus on humanizing the process, empathy, tolerance, controlling unforeseen strategies, and managing emotions. After all, human relationships are complex, and we always learn something new in every communication. The reflections I share with you today come from my experience as an interview manager. First, a break with a cup of hot chocolate and cake. --- # Lecciones aprendidas❣️ Lessons learned # 1️⃣La observación 🔍 Podríamos pensar que el momento clave es cuando la persona se sienta frente a ti, comienzan a hablar, ¡y listo!. Pero mi mayor lección es que se necesita mucha atención y escucha activa a todo el proceso y sus detalles. Es decir, lo fundamental es qué pasa antes, durante y después. Esto es clave para darle sentido y coherencia al diálogo y para conocer a la otra persona, prestando atención a cómo se siente, cómo llegó, el momento, el entorno y todo lo demás que se pueda considerar. La observación nos da muchísima información, incluso más de lo que se dice al hablar. Y no me refiero solo al lenguaje corporal. Me refiero a todo en su conjunto. No podemos ser personas "automáticas"; este proceso exige estar presente en cuerpo y mente para conectar con todo lo que sucede e incluso cómo el entorno influye en la entrevista. > We might think that the key moment is when the person sits down in front of you, you start talking, and that's it! But my biggest lesson is that you need to pay close attention and listen actively to the whole process and its details. In other words, what happens before, during, and after is fundamental. This is key to giving meaning and coherence to the dialogue and to getting to know the other person, paying attention to how they feel, how they arrived, the moment, the environment, and everything else that can be considered. Observation gives us a lot of information, even more than what is said when talking. And I'm not just talking about body language. I mean everything as a whole! We can't be “automatic” people; this process requires us to be present in body and mind to connect with everything that is happening and even how the environment influences the interview. # 2️⃣¡Cuidado con las preguntas! 🚫 Confieso que cometí este error muchas veces. Hay preguntas que son fatales en una entrevista, como: ¿Tienes hijos(as)?, ¿Estado civil?, ¿Edad?, entre otras. Estas preguntas suelen responder a un guión inapropiado y, peor aún, pueden generar incomodidad o hacer que la persona se sienta excluida y cuestionada por no poder responder algunas cosas como quizás la sociedad y los patrones esperan. Estamos ahí para mucho más. Queremos explorar por qué se postuló, qué le interesa, conocer sus habilidades, dónde ve sus oportunidades de mejora, etc. Es vital evitar divagar y ser redundantes. Hay que buscar la claridad, la brevedad y mucha asertividad. Esto es algo que yo sigo aprendiendo día a día. >Be careful with your questions! I confess that I made this mistake many times. There are questions that are fatal in an interview, such as: Do you have children? Marital status? Age? Among others. These questions tend to follow an inappropriate script and, worse still, can cause discomfort or make the person feel excluded and questioned for not being able to answer certain things as society and employers might expect. We are there for much more! We want to explore why they applied, what interests them, learn about their skills, where they see opportunities for improvement, etc. It is vital to avoid rambling and being redundant. We must strive for clarity, brevity, and assertiveness. This is something I continue to learn every day!. # 3️⃣La forma y el fondo importan. 📌 Generalmente, al cerrar una entrevista con una persona, decimos que le llamaremos (sea seleccionada o no). Es importante no generar falsas expectativas, no establecer compromisos que no podemos cumplir, y hace todo el esfuerzo por comunicar bien el objetivo desde el inicio y repetirlo al final. Un compañero me hizo notar algo fundamental en una oportunidad: Jamás debemos hacer sentir inferior o transmitir inseguridad a nadie. Recuerdo que una vez le dije a alguien: "Te haremos saber si te tomamos en cuenta". ¡Fatal!, usar esa frase es implicar que, si no es seleccionada, es porque algo malo tiene o algo no está bien con esa persona. Esa frase tan simple puede generar malentendidos y desatar frustraciones innecesarias. La lección aquí es: Siempre debemos usar un lenguaje que reconozca el valor de su participación y respete su tiempo, comunicando con claridad los criterios. Por ejemplo, es mejor decir: "Nos comunicaremos contigo con el resultado del proceso" o "Apreciamos mucho tu postulación y te informaremos la decisión final". La claridad y el respeto son la mejor manera de cerrar. Pienso que hay muchas cosas más aprendidas, pero para mí, estas son las que más han destacado durante estas experiencias. ¿Cómo te has sentido durante una entrevista de trabajo o por alguna postulación para oportunidades?. It is important not to raise false expectations, not to make commitments that we cannot fulfill, and to make every effort to communicate the objective clearly from the outset and repeat it at the end. A colleague once pointed out something fundamental to me: we must never make anyone feel inferior or convey insecurity! I remember once saying to someone, “We'll let you know if we consider you.” That was terrible! Using that phrase implies that if they are not selected, it is because there is something wrong with them or something is not right with that person. That simple phrase can lead to misunderstandings and unnecessary frustration. The lesson here is: We should always use language that recognizes the value of their participation and respects their time, clearly communicating the criteria. For example, it is better to say, “We will contact you with the outcome of the process” or “We greatly appreciate your application and will inform you of the final decision.” Clarity and respect are the best way to close. I think there are many more things to learn, but for me, these are the ones that have stood out the most during these experiences.
