In 1913, Civil War veterans met in Gettysburg to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of the battle that took place there.

Dorothy Counts was the first black girl to attend an all-white school in North Carolina in 1957.
Harassment began when the wife of the leader of the White Citizens Council, encouraged students to keep her out of the school.
Marking one of the first failed attempts at desegregation, she left the school after four days.
