Hello, friends of Hive! Today I want to introduce you to one of my cats, Liah. A visually impaired kitten that I adopted at the end of 2019 and who has become my faithful companion.

Many people hesitate to adopt visually impaired cats because of the false belief that their care will be much more complicated. However, cats with this disability can lead a completely normal life just like any other cat. You would be surprised to know the adaptive disposition of these little animals.

¡Hola, amigos de Hive! Hoy quiero presentarles a uno de mis gatos, Líah. Una gatita con discapacidad visual que adopté a finales de 2019 y se ha convertido en mi fiel compañera.

Muchas personas dudan en adoptar gatos con discapacidad visual por la falsa creencia de que sus cuidados serán mucho más complicados. Sin embargo, los gatos con esta deficiencia pueden llevar una vida completamente normal como cualquier otro gato. Te sorprendería saber la disposición adaptativa de estos pequeños animales.

Born in the garage of an abandoned house, I wandered blindly through the streets following the trail of mom and my litter in search of some food. Some local people threatened to get rid of us, until we arrived at the doorstep of my current human mother's house. At that time, she had 4 dogs, so we would not go any closer than the entrance to the place, where daily she started leaving us fresh water and food.

I don't remember ever being able to see the outside world, beyond some lights and silhouettes, my vision was blurred. As the days went by, everything around me became darker and I felt my eyes hurt and closed more and more.

Nacida en el garaje de una casa abandonada, deambulaba a ciegas por las calles siguiendo el rastro de mamá y mi camada en busca de algo de comida. Algunas personas del lugar amenazaron con deshacerse de nosotros, hasta que llegamos a las puertas de la casa de mi actual madre humana. En ese momento, ella tenía 4 perros por lo que no nos acercábamos más allá de la entrada del lugar, donde a diario empezó a dejarnos agua fresca y alimentos.

No recuerdo haber podido ver el mundo exterior jamás, más allá de algunas luces y siluetas, mi vista se encontraba nublada. Con el pasar de los días, todo a mi alrededor se hacía más oscuro y sentía como mis ojitos dolían y se cerraban cada vez más.

That human, upon observing my condition and hearing the complaints and threats from some neighbors about killing us, made the decision to take us off the streets and let us live with her. It was not an easy thing for her, since due to all the mistreatment and the null interaction we had with humans we did not let her get too close and when we felt that someone was approaching, we fled quickly for fear that they could hurt us.

Finally, one afternoon in December 2019 with the help of others, my human mommy was able to take me in her hands and take me with her to a place that was previously unknown to me.

I was terrified, I had never been away from my mother and litter who fled the place at the time of rescue. I couldn't see anything; I didn't feel the presence of my herd and I only heard human voices around me. I could not stop crying from fear and despair.

Aquella humana, al observar mi condición y escuchar las quejas y amenazas de algunos vecinos sobre acabar con nosotros, tomó la decisión de sacarnos de las calles y dejarnos vivir con ella. No fue algo fácil para ella, ya que debido a todos los malos tratos y la nula interacción que teníamos con humanos no dejábamos que se acercara demasiado y al sentir que alguien se aproximaba, huíamos rápidamente por temor a que pudieran hacernos daño.

Finalmente, una tarde de diciembre de 2019 con la ayuda de otras personas, mi mami humana pudo tomarme entre sus manos y llevarme con ella a un lugar que hasta entonces era desconocido para mí.

Estaba aterrorizada, nunca había estado lejos de mi madre y mi camada quienes huyeron del lugar al momento del rescate. No podía ver nada; no sentía la presencia de mi manada y solo escuchaba voces humanas a mi alrededor. No podía parar de llorar del miedo y la desesperación.

After the visit to the human they call a veterinarian, we began our journey to what I now call home. Once there, I felt the presence of another cat I had never met before. He tried to approach me, but I was so afraid he might hurt me, that I spent the next few days avoiding him and hiding in the corners of the house.

Meanwhile, my human mommy spent day after day healing my little eyes. The vet said that I had a very serious infection in them and that this could probably be the cause of my blindness.

As the days went by, I gradually got used to the presence of that other cat and decided to get closer to play. I also discovered how warm some human hands could be through my mommy's care and cuddles.

Luego de la visita al humano al que llaman veterinario, emprendimos nuestro viaje a lo que hoy llamo hogar. Una vez allí sentí la presencia de otro gato al que no conocía antes. Él intentaba acercarse, pero me daba tanto miedo que pudiera hacerme daño, que pase los siguientes días evitándolo y escondiéndome en los rincones de la casa.

Por su parte, mi mami humana se dedicaba día tras día a curar mis ojitos. El veterinario dijo que tenía una infección en ellos bastante grave y que probablemente esa podría ser la causa de mi ceguera.

Con el pasar de los días, poco a poco me fui acostumbrando a la presencia de aquel otro gato y decidí acercarme para jugar. También descubrí lo cálidas que podían ser algunas manos humanas a través de los cuidados y mimos de mi mami.

At the end of the treatment of my little eyes we went back to the vet. The infection was gone, but I still couldn't see. He said that the damage was irreversible and surely the reason for my blindness was due to a congenital condition, so I would live with blindness and need special care for the rest of my life.

I felt a little sadness in mommy's voice when she heard the news, but she was not discouraged and continued to take care of me and give me lots of love until today.

Al finalizar el tratamiento de mis ojitos volvimos a visitar al veterinario. La infección se había ido, pero aún no podía ver. Él dijo que el daño era irreversible y seguramente la razón de mi ceguera se debía a una condición congénita, por lo que viviría con ceguera y necesitaría de cuidados especiales el resto de mi vida.

Sentí un poco de tristeza en la voz de mami al escuchar la noticia, pero no se desanimó y continuó cuidando de mí y dándome mucho amor hasta el día de hoy.

Currently, I live a happy life with my human mommy and my partner Felipe. I am still distrustful with humans I don't know, but once I get to trust them I am a very sweet and playful kitty. I love to sleep all day in mommy's bed and tuna and meat treats are my favorite treats in the world.

I lead a totally normal life despite my visual impairment, being able to do anything another cat can do. Mommy says I am an angel, very smart and beautiful, and all the humans who know me say I am just adorable.

Actualmente, vivo una vida feliz junto a mi mami humana y mi compañero Felipe. Sigo siendo desconfiada con los humanos que desconozco, pero una vez que entro en confianza soy una gatita muy dulce y juguetona. Amo dormir todo el día en la cama de mami y los bocados de carne y atún son mis favoritos en el mundo.

Llevo una vida totalmente normal a pesar de mi discapacidad visual, siendo capaz de hacer cualquier cosa que otro gato puede hacer. Mami dice que soy un ángel, muy inteligente y hermosa, y todos los humanos que me conocen dicen que soy simplemente adorable.
