Te hablo un poco sobre mí

Nací y crecí en una pequeña ciudad en la región de los llanos. Tuve una infancia de muchas carencias económicas, de dificultades enormes en términos de educación, transporte y alimentación, pero ello no me limitó jamás, por el contrario, con la ayuda de mi madre y mi abuela, logré dos cosas: ser un niño feliz y hacer de mí un hombre con valores humanos.

Todo comenzó a los diez años

Escribir ha sido toda una aventura para mí. Todo inició cuando cursaba quinto grado en la escuela. Recuerdo claramente que me pidieron escribir un poema y yo, que como cualquier chico de esa edad no tenía ni la menor idea de cómo se hacía, me las apañé para componer uno con el que me sentí a gusto, aunque al día siguiente, delante de todos mis compañeros de clase, me ocurriría algo que cambiaría mi vida para siempre.

Aquella maestra me hizo leer el poema y yo, feliz, lo hice. Todos me miraban y sentí que lo había hecho muy bien. La sensación fue indescriptible, pero duró muy poco. Ella quitó de mis manos el poema, me lo arrebató con saña y comenzó a ridiculizarme, verso a verso, frente a la clase. Quedé destrozado. No quise escribir más en mucho tiempo.

La música me volvió a acercar a las letras

A pesar de mi negativa perenne a escribir, a los 12 años tuve la necesidad de iniciarme en la música a través del arte de la ejecución de la guitarra, pero no podía pagar una.

Mi madre no tenía el dinero para comprármela y, estaba seguro, no haría ningún esfuerzo para obtenerlo si no le demostraba antes que en verdad me comprometería a aprender, así que, con ayuda de algunos amigos, tomé prestada una guitarra de la iglesia y en el transcurso de varios días logré aprender los primeros acordes con los que logré componer una canción que dediqué a mi madre tan pronto como pude.

El resultado fue el esperado y, luego de unos días, tuve mi propio instrumento que con el tiempo solté, eso sí, en favor de la composición literaria.

Me convertí en un endemoniado

A los 17 años entré al Seminario Divina Pastora de Barquisimeto, Venezuela, donde pretendí estar hasta ser ordenado sacerdote, pero no lo pude hacer. En lugar de dedicarme a la oración y a la evangelización, me consagré a la fundación de un periódico que circuló dentro del claustro, y un club de poesía, lo cual desató la ira de los curas que, poco después de un año ya me tildaban de hereje y endemoniado. La religión, definitivamente, no fue para mí.

¡Hice de todo!

Desde los 18 hasta los 25 años rodé por muchos empleos. Pasé por una imprenta, por una estación de radio, por una estación de televisión, por una granja, por una agencia del gobierno y, por mi cuenta, fabriqué helados, productos químicos, envasé agua y hasta me empeñé en escribir un primer libro que, después de leerlo, lo tiré entero a las llamas para que nadie, jamás, viese aquello que todavía en aquel momento me daba vergüenza.

En ese período de mi vida también estudié informática sin terminar la carrera y fue lo mismo que ocurrió con educación y trabajo social, al mismo tiempo perfeccioné mi técnica artística y tuve mis primeros fracasos en las artes del amor. Tenía ya el caldo perfecto en que se gestan los mejores textos, pero todavía me faltaba algo. Me sentía incompleto.

Encontré un camino hacia mi pasión

Aquella necesidad de encontrarme con el yo que ni yo mismo sabía qué era lo que quería, me llevó a confrontarme a mí mismo. El resultado de aquella larga charla no me sorprendió. Decidí que tenía que convertirme en periodista y escritor, era eso solo eso lo que el alma me pedía.

Me recibí de licenciado en Comunicación Social en Julio de 2012, a la edad de 30 años. Tenía miedo, mucho, porque llevaba ocho años de retraso en la carrera. Tenía todas las de perder y lo sabía, así que decidí hacer una buena jugada para asegurarme el éxito: aprender a escribir con calidad indiscutible y tomar las fuentes periodísticas que nadie quisiera, y transformarlas.

Fue así, por ese empeño, que solo un par de años más tarde me convertí en el editor del suplemento cultural del diario en que trabajé y, con ese poder en mis manos, comencé a explorar el periodismo de opinión, la denuncia y la política, fuentes que poco a poco me colocaron en el radar de los órganos de represión de Venezuela.

El sueño se convirtió en pesadilla

Me persiguieron, estuve preso, me vilipendiaron y me sometieron al escarnio solo por cumplir con el deber de informar y, sin embargo, lo seguí haciendo, a pesar del miedo y de la intimidación, pero un buen día ya no pude más. Algo dentro de mí se rompió y ya no quise volver a escribir, tenía auténtico temor de hacerlo y eso me hizo sentir miserable.

El tiempo me sanó

Con el tiempo olvidé y perdoné a mi maestra, ya no le guardé rencor. De alguna manera entendí que a pesar de que me hirió con el bulling al que me sometió, ese hecho me impulsó a ir tras mi sueño. Al régimen venezolano no le he otorgado el perdón, creo que no lo merece, pero entendí que no debo dejar de escribir, aunque me persigan por hacerlo, por eso estoy aquí y sé que con tu voto podré salir adelante y seguir soñando y escribiendo.

It all started when I was ten years old

Writing has been an adventure for me. It all started when I was in fifth grade at school. I remember clearly that I was asked to write a poem and I, who like any boy of that age had no idea how it was done, managed to compose one that I felt comfortable with, although the next day, in front of all my classmates, something would happen to me that would change my life forever.

That teacher made me read the poem and I happily did it. Everyone looked at me and I felt that I had done very well. The feeling was indescribable, but it was short-lived. She took the poem out of my hands, viciously snatched it from me and began to ridicule me, verse by verse, in front of the class. I was devastated. I didn't want to write any more for a long time.

Music brought me back to writing

Despite my perennial refusal to write, at the age of 12 I felt the need to initiate myself into music through the art of playing the guitar, but I couldn't afford one. My mother did not have the money to buy it for me and, I was sure, she would not make any effort to obtain it if I did not show her beforehand that I would really commit myself to learn, so, with the help of some friends, I borrowed a guitar from the church and in the course of several days I managed to learn the first chords with which I managed to compose a song that I dedicated to my mother as soon as I could. The result was as expected and, after a few days, I had my own instrument which I eventually let go, in favor of literary composition.

I became a demoniac

At the age of 17 I entered the Divina Pastora Seminary in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, where I intended to stay until I was ordained a priest, but I could not do it. Instead of dedicating myself to prayer and evangelization, I devoted myself to founding a newspaper that circulated within the cloister, and a poetry club, which unleashed the wrath of the priests who, shortly after a year, already branded me as a heretic and demoniac. Religion was definitely not for me.

I did a lot of things!

From the age of 18 to 25 I had many jobs. I worked in a printing press, a radio station, a television station, a farm, a government agency and, on my own, I made ice cream, chemicals, bottled water and even wrote my first book which, after reading it, I threw it all into the flames so that no one would ever see what I was still ashamed of at that time.

In that period of my life I also studied computer science without finishing my degree and it was the same thing that happened with education and social work, at the same time I perfected my artistic technique and I had my first failures in the arts of love. I already had the perfect broth in which the best texts are gestated, but I still lacked something. I felt incomplete.

I found a way to my passion

That need to find the self that I didn't even know what I wanted led me to confront myself. The result of that long talk did not surprise me. I decided that I had to become a journalist and a writer, that was what my soul was asking for.

I graduated with a degree in Social Communication in July 2012, at the age of 30. I was afraid, very afraid, because I was eight years behind in my career. The game was against me and I knew it, so I decided to make a good move to ensure my success: learn to write with unquestionable quality and take the journalistic sources that nobody wanted and transform them.

It was thus, because of that determination, that only a couple of years later I became the editor of the cultural supplement of the newspaper where I worked and, with that power in my hands, I began to explore opinion journalism, denunciation and politics, sources that little by little put me on the radar of the organs of repression in Venezuela.

The dream turned into a nightmare

They persecuted me, I was imprisoned, they vilified me and subjected me to scorn just for doing my duty to inform and, nevertheless, I kept on doing it, despite the fear and intimidation, but one day I could not take it anymore. Something inside me broke and I didn't want to write anymore, I was genuinely afraid to do so and that made me feel miserable.

The time healed me

Eventually I forgot and forgave my teacher, I no longer held a grudge. Somehow, I understood that even though she hurt me with the bulling she subjected me to, that fact pushed me to go after my dream. To the Venezuelan regime I have not granted forgiveness, I think it does not deserve it, but I understood that I must not stop writing, even if they persecute me for doing so, that is why I am here and I know that with your vote I will be able to move forward and continue dreaming and writing.
