Alguien dijo alguna vez que “lo más seguro en esta vida es la muerte”, lo cual es algo ciertísimo. Vivimos como si nunca fuésemos a morir, y aunque suene extraño y hasta fatalista, como seres humanos debemos estar conscientes en todo momento que la muerte nos asedia y nos acompaña en cada paso que damos. ¿Para qué nos sirve pensar esto?

>Someone once said that "the surest thing in this life is death", which is very true. We live as if we were never going to die, and although it may sound strange and even fatalistic, as human beings we must be aware at all times that death besieges us and accompanies us in every step we take. What is the use of thinking this?

No es para tener miedo a la vida, ¡al contrario! Pensar así solo nos debe impulsar a ser responsables en cada acto que hagamos, y cerrar ciclos en cada etapa, sin herir a nuestros semejantes. Además, debemos pensar no solo en la vida que vivimos ahora, sino en la que vendrá…

# ¡ALERT SPOILER! Ahora bien, me detendré un poco en la reseña de “Nana Vieja”, anhelando que puedan leer por ustedes mismos esta historia que vale mucho la pena deleitarse. Recuerdo que en el momento en que adquirí ese cuento, le pregunté al vendedor si tenía alguno interesante que me recomendara, a lo que me respondió que acaba de llegar dicho libro y empezó a leérmelo (cabe destacar que esta persona era un estudiante de la carrera de Licenciatura en Educación mención Castellano y Literatura de la misma universidad donde estudié, y disfrutaba leer cuentos tanto o más que yo). Al escucharlo, sin necesidad de ver todas las imágenes pude imaginarme cada escena, casi lloraba en la tienda, así que en lo que terminó de leer lo compré inmediatamente. Al llegar a casa, le conté el cuento a mi mamá (cuando vivía con ella) y ella lloró conmigo…

>Now, I will dwell a little on the review of "Nana Vieja", hoping that you can read for yourselves this story that is well worth the delight. I remember that at the moment I acquired that story, I asked the seller if he had any interesting one to recommend me, to which he replied that he had just arrived and started to read it to me (it is worth mentioning that this person was a student of the Bachelor's degree in Education mention in Spanish and Literature at the same university where I studied, and he enjoyed reading stories as much or more than I did). When I listened to it, without needing to see all the images I could imagine every scene, I was almost crying in the store, so as soon as he finished reading I bought it immediately. When I got home, I told the story to my mom (when I lived with her) and she cried with me....

¡No se equivoquen! No es un cuento triste ni trágico como para ocultarlo de los niños. Lo que pasa es que es muy emotivo, y lleva a cada lector a recordar o imaginarse momentos hermosos y únicos con su anciana madre, su abuela o alguna mujer longeva de valor en su vida. Esta historia comienza presentando muy brevemente la vida diaria de Nana vieja con su nieta. De acuerdo a las ilustraciones en acuarela, hermosamente hechas por Ron Brooks, son dos cerditas, una vieja y una joven. Ambas vivían juntas desde hacía mucho tiempo y se compartían los deberes de la casa, además de que Nana vieja demostraba su amor a su nieta preocupándose porque ella comiera bien.

>Make no mistake! It is not a sad or tragic tale to hide from children. What happens is that it is very touching, and leads every reader to remember or imagine beautiful and unique moments with their old mother, grandmother or some long-lived woman of value in their life.
This story begins by presenting very briefly the daily life of old Nana with her granddaughter. According to the watercolor illustrations, beautifully done by Ron Brooks, they are two little piggies, one old and one young. The two had lived together for a long time and shared the household chores, and Old Nana showed her love for her granddaughter by making sure she ate well.

Muchos de nosotros, en algún momento de nuestras vidas, tuvimos algún vínculo cercano con las abuelas o ancianas de la familia. Las abuelas tienen esa chispa especial para infundir respeto y cariño. Y con su ejemplo, muchos de nosotros aprendimos algún oficio de la casa, o algún hábito que hasta ahora practicamos.
>Many of us, at some point in our lives, had a close bond with the grandmothers or old ladies in the family. Grandmothers have that special spark to instill respect and affection. And by their example, many of us learned some household craft, or some habit that we still practice today.

Recuerdo que, en mi infancia, cuando visitaba la casa de mi abuela materna, ella se la pasaba cosiendo cualquier cosa a mano (aunque casi no veía, y pasaba más de una hora tratando de ensartar una aguja, entonces al final era yo quien se las ensartaba), o me invitaba a jugar alguno de sus juegos de mesa favoritos, como trique, cartas españolas, dominó, lotería de animales y bingo, o también se ponía a cantar galerones y joropos orientales mientras recordaba los tiempos en que su esposo vivía, cuando juntos amenizaban las fiestas y reuniones en su pueblo de El Guamache (ella cantaba y él tocaba la mandolina). >I remember that, in my childhood, when I visited my maternal grandmother's house, she would spend her time sewing anything by hand (although she could hardly see, and would spend more than an hour trying to thread a needle, so in the end it was me who would thread them), or she would invite me to play one of her favorite board games, like trique, Spanish cards, dominoes, animal lottery and bingo, like trique, Spanish cards, dominoes, animal lottery and bingo, or she would sing galerones and joropos orientales while remembering the times when her husband was alive, when together they entertained the parties and meetings in their town of El Guamache (she sang and he played the mandolin).

Mi abuela era una mujer fuerte, sabia, sincera y, a veces, sin pelos en la lengua para “cantarle” las verdades a quienes se lo merecían. Pero al crecer, me di cuenta que la fortaleza de mi abuela, se debía a su carácter honesto para enfrentar la vida, si estaba triste lloraba, si estaba alegre cantaba, y si estaba molesta lo demostraba. Ella no tenía doble cara. Esto es parte de comprender cómo “vivir la vida con sabiduría”.

>My grandmother was a strong woman, wise, sincere and, sometimes, without mincing her words to "sing" the truth to those who deserved it. But as I grew up, I realized that my grandmother's strength was due to her honest character to face life, if she was sad she would cry, if she was happy she would sing, and if she was upset she would show it. She was not two-faced. This is part of understanding how to "live life wisely".

A veces, las personas creen que son fuertes ocultando a cada momento sus sentimientos, diciendo lo que no quieren decir, haciendo obligadamente lo que no quieren hacer, y demostrando una forma de vida y de pensamiento contraria en su totalidad a lo que realmente son en su corazón. A menudo, esto ocurre cuando se quiere agradar a los demás, y vivir creyendo se es feliz recibiendo elogios de los otros. Al final de esto, esa persona se pierde a sí misma, y no sabe qué senda andar.
Gracias a Dios, mi abuela, aún con edad avanzada, renunció a sus costumbres religiosas de sus ascendientes, y algunos hábitos tóxicos, por seguir el camino de Cristo. ¡Nunca es tarde para comenzar de nuevo en Dios!

>Sometimes, people believe they are strong by hiding their feelings at every moment, saying what they do not want to say, forcibly doing what they do not want to do, and demonstrating a way of living and thinking that is totally contrary to what they really are in their heart. Often, this happens when they want to please others, and live believing that they are happy receiving praise from others. At the end of this, that person loses himself, and does not know which path to walk.
Thank God, my grandmother, even at an advanced age, renounced the religious customs of her ancestors, and some toxic habits, to follow the path of Christ. It is never too late to start again in God!

La influencia de los abuelos en la vida de los nietos, es algo tan grande que ni ellos mismos se lo imaginan. Por eso, si alguno de ustedes, queridos lectores, ya son abuelos, sepan que tienen una oportunidad irrepetible para transmitir amor, a través de cada acto de cuidado y enseñanza para con sus nietos. Los abuelos se convierten en una influencia poderosa, en especial, cuando los padres no están del todo cerca o plenamente involucrados en la crianza de los niños (lamentablemente, en nuestra sociedad venezolana, debido a muchas razones, como la migración, el trabajo o la irresponsabilidad e inmadurez de los padres, son los abuelitos quienes crían a los nietos y así su labor de crianza no tiene tiempo de jubilación). Sean los héroes de los niños, aprovechen esa ventaja que ellos mismos les brindan.

Continuando con la historia, una mañana cualquiera, Nana vieja no se levantó para cocinar, ni se sentó a desayunar en el comedor; acción que le pareció extraña a Chanchita (así se le llama a la nieta), por lo que fue a verla a su habitación. Nana vieja le dijo que se sentía cansada y que comería en su cama. A su nieta le extrañó aún más lo que Nana vieja le dijo sobre comer en la cama, ya que ella detestaba dejar migajas de comida por allí. Pero aceptó lo que la abuela le pedía y se retiró del cuarto. Chanchita hizo todas las labores hogareñas sola ese día, y luego también ella se fue a dormir, al lado de su abuela, como cuando lo hacía de bebé.

>Continuing with the story, one morning, Nana vieja did not get up to cook, nor did she sit down to have breakfast in the dining room; an action that seemed strange to Chanchita (that is how the granddaughter is called), so she went to see her in her room. Nana vieja told her that she felt tired and that she would eat in her bed. Her granddaughter was even more surprised by what Nana vieja told her about eating in bed, since she hated to leave crumbs of food lying around. But she accepted Nana's request and left the room. Chanchita did all the housework alone that day, and then she too went to sleep, next to her grandmother, as she did when she was a baby.

A la mañana siguiente, Nana vieja se levantó para desayunar. Chanchita estaba un poco alegre, pero también extrañada, al ver que su abuela solo comió un poco. Nana vieja se levanta de la cama y dijo que ese día tenía muchas cosas que hacer, porque “debía estar preparada”. Chanchita en su corazón comprendió a lo que se refería y la acompañó en sus diligencias.
Al salir, Nana vieja hizo tres diligencias puntuales: fue a la biblioteca a regresar los libros que había pedido prestado, se dirigió al banco para sacar el dinero que había ahorrado y cerró la cuenta; después, fue al abasto y pagó todas las deudas que tenía en ese momento.

>The next morning, old Nana got up for breakfast. Chanchita was a little happy, but also surprised to see that her grandmother only ate a little. Nana vieja got out of bed and said that she had a lot of things to do that day, because she "had to be prepared". Chanchita in her heart understood what she meant and accompanied her on her errands.
When she left, Nana vieja did three punctual errands: she went to the library to return the books she had borrowed, she went to the bank to withdraw the money she had saved and closed the account; then she went to the grocery store and paid all the debts she had at that moment.

Considero que Nana vieja fue responsable en su vida hasta su final. Y no solo responsable, sino que también siguió cuidando a su nieta en sus últimos días.
Generalmente, cuando ocurre una muerte, los demás familiares y amigos se encargan de resolver las “cuentas pendientes” que dejaron los difuntos. Muchas veces, esto genera peleas, frustración y divisiones dentro de las familias, y más, si el fallecido no era llevaba una vida muy ordenada. >I consider that old Nana was responsible in her life until her end. And not only responsible, but she also continued to take care of her granddaughter in her last days. Generally, when a death occurs, the other relatives and friends are in charge of settling the "pending accounts" left by the deceased. Many times, this generates fights, frustration and divisions within families, especially if the deceased did not lead a very orderly life.

Esto que hizo Nana vieja es sumamente importante, porque antes de irnos de este mundo, ayudaríamos a aliviar las cargas emocionales y financieras que nuestros seres queridos tendrían que enfrentar. Esto es aplicable para aquellos que ya consideran que su final está cerca, bien sea por enfermedad o por vejez. Son situaciones que, si bien pudiesen parecer banales, se podrían convertir en un verdadero dolor de cabeza para la familia, y los hermosos recuerdos vividos pudiesen verse vetados por estos escenarios.

>What Nana Vieja did is extremely important, because before we leave this world, we would help alleviate the emotional and financial burdens that our loved ones would have to face. This is applicable for those who already consider that their end is near, either due to illness or old age. These are situations that, although they may seem banal, could become a real headache for the family, and the beautiful memories lived could be vetoed by these scenarios.

Cuando terminó de hacer esas diligencias, decidió invitar a su nieta a “festejar”. No fue a un restaurante a comer comida tradicional, ni quiso tomar vino para brindar, y menos fue a su casa a escuchar su música preferida. Nana vieja quiso dar su último paseo con Chanchita a los más hermosos lugares que había visto y percibido con sus sentidos.
Al parecer, Nana vieja disfrutaba de la naturaleza más que de otra cosa; por eso, en su paseo, le mostró la belleza de la creación en los detalles que a veces no se toman en cuenta mientras pasamos cerca de ellos. Esa habilidad de considerar el valor de la sencillez y, a la vez, espectacularidad de la naturaleza, solo se forja con los años y la experiencia. Es una propiedad que se puede aprender fácilmente de los ancianos. >When she finished running these errands, she decided to invite her granddaughter to "celebrate". She did not go to a restaurant to eat traditional food, nor did she want to drink wine to toast, and even less did she go home to listen to her favorite music. Nana vieja wanted to take her last walk with Chanchita to the most beautiful places she had seen and perceived with her senses.
Apparently, Old Nana enjoyed nature more than anything else; therefore, on her walk, she showed her the beauty of creation in the details that sometimes are not taken into account as we pass by them. That ability to consider the value of the simplicity and, at the same time, spectacular nature, is only forged with years and experience. It is a property that can be easily learned from the elderly.

El rey David, adquirió la práctica de la meditación en la creación, esto lo vemos a menudo en sus escritos, en el libro de los Salmos. Uno de tantos es el Salmo 8, el cual dice:

“¡Jehová, Señor nuestro, cuán grande es tu nombre en toda la tierra! ¡Has puesto tu gloria sobre los cielos!... Cuando veo tus cielos, obra de tus dedos, la luna y las estrellas que tú formaste, digo: "¿Qué es el hombre para que tengas de él memoria, y el hijo del hombre para que lo visites?" Lo has hecho poco menor que los ángeles y lo coronaste de gloria y de honra. Lo hiciste señorear sobre las obras de tus manos; todo lo pusiste debajo de sus pies; ovejas y bueyes, todo ello, y asimismo las bestias del campo, las aves del cielo y los peces del mar; ¡todo cuanto pasa por los senderos del mar! ¡Jehová, Señor nuestro, cuán grande es tu nombre en toda la tierra! “

>King David, acquired the practice of meditation on creation, we see this often in his writings, in the book of Psalms. One of many is Psalm 8, which reads: >"Jehovah, our Lord! how great is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens... When I see your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars which thou hast formed, I say: "What is man that thou art mindful of him, and the son of man that thou shouldest visit him?" Thou hast made him a little lower than the angels and crowned him with glory and honor. You made him ruler over the works of your hands; Thou hast put all things under his feet, the flocks and the herds, all of them, and the beasts of the field, and the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea; all that pass through the paths of the sea! O LORD our Lord! how great is your name in all the earth!"

Cuando nos tomamos el tiempo para forjar en nosotros la práctica de la meditación en la naturaleza, nos volvemos más sensibles a Dios y a su magnífico poder, lo percibimos en cada planta, rocío, puesta de Sol, laguna, o incluso en la mirada de los animales; y allí el Señor trata con nosotros, nos da calma, gozo, y sabiduría para enfrentar las decisiones difíciles de la vida.
Sobre la disciplina de la meditación, el autor cuáquero Richard J. Foster, en su libro Alabanza a la Disciplina dedica un capítulo completo a la meditación, como parte de las disciplinas espirituales que todo el que quiere fortalecer y hacer crecer su fe en Dios debe ejercitar. Ojo, debo dejar en claro que solamente con meditar no se puede a conocer a Dios, esta es solo una de las tantas prácticas que el creyente debe hacer con regularidad para desarrollar una relación más profunda con él.

>When we take the time to forge in ourselves the practice of meditation in nature, we become more sensitive to God and his magnificent power, we perceive him in every plant, dew, sunset, pond, or even in the gaze of animals; and there the Lord deals with us, gives us calm, joy, and wisdom to face the difficult decisions of life.
On the discipline of meditation, the Quaker author Richard J. Foster, in his book Praise to Discipline devotes an entire chapter to meditation, as part of the spiritual disciplines that everyone who wants to strengthen and grow their faith in God should exercise. I must make it clear that meditation alone is not enough to get to know God, this is only one of the many practices that the believer should do regularly to develop a deeper relationship with Him.

Volviendo al cuento: Nana vieja regresa a casa con Chanchita, ya muy cansada, pero antes de descansar, le entrega a la nieta el dinero que le quedó luego del cierre de la cuenta de banco y de saldar sus deudas. “Guárdalo y úsalo bien”, le dijo a Chanchita, entonces su corazón se llenó emoción y tristeza, mas su abuela le dijo que no llorara.
Otra vez Nana vieja, con este acto de consideración para con Chanchita, le demuestra amor y cuidado. Véase que, en cualquier relación interpersonal, “amor y cuidado” van de la mano. No es posible afirmar que ama a alguien, si no le demuestra que lo cuida, considera sus necesidades y sentimientos, y haga acciones favorables para con ese alguien. El amor es un sentimiento, amar es una decisión, una acción, o más bien, un cúmulo infinito de acciones.

>Back to the story: Old Nana returns home with Chanchita, already very tired, but before resting, she gives her granddaughter the money she had left after closing the bank account and settling her debts. "Keep it and use it well," she told Chanchita, then her heart was filled with emotion and sadness, but her grandmother told her not to cry.
Again Nana vieja, with this act of consideration for Chanchita, shows her love and care. See that, in any interpersonal relationship, "love and care" go hand in hand. It is not possible to affirm that you love someone if you do not show that you care for them, consider their needs and feelings, and take favorable actions towards them. Love is a feeling, to love is a decision, an action, or rather, an infinite accumulation of actions.

Nana vieja se fue a su cama, Chanchita la acompañó. Ella también demostró amor por su abnegada abuela velando sus sueños, cuidando de ella, haciéndola sentir confortable en su habitación.
Por último, Chanchita se metió en la cama con su abuela, durmieron juntas “por última vez”, y así Nana vieja pasó a otro mundo, con la satisfacción de haber cuidado y amado a su nieta hasta el final, y sin preocupaciones en su mente ni angustia, ya que había preparado a su amada Chanchita para este momento.
Al parecer, Nana Vieja pudo “descansar en paz”. Tuvo ese privilegio, que no todos llegan a tener. El descanso eterno, depende completamente de Dios, primeramente, y, en segundo lugar, de las decisiones y acciones que realicemos en vida.

>Old Nana went to her bed, Chanchita accompanied her. She also showed love for her devoted grandmother by watching over her dreams, taking care of her, making her feel comfortable in her room.
Finally, Chanchita got into bed with her grandmother, they slept together "for the last time", and so Nana Vieja passed to another world, with the satisfaction of having cared for and loved her granddaughter until the end, and without worries in her mind or anguish, as she had prepared her beloved Chanchita for this moment.
Apparently, Nana Vieja was able to "rest in peace". She had that privilege, which not everyone gets to have. Eternal rest depends entirely on God, first of all, and, secondly, on the decisions and actions we make in life.

Nana vieja no tuvo miedo de morir, sabía que su hora llegaría y procuró hacerle la vida un poco más fácil a su querida nieta, la persona que más amaba en esta vida. Todo lo que en su última etapa de vida realizó, compró o creó fue para compartirlo con Chanchita. Nana vieja estaba clara que, al partir de este plano terrenal, nada se llevaría, sino que se lo dejaría a su nieta y ella seguiría en esta tierra, por eso se preocupaba por ella. Sabía que su vida seguiría en la otra vida, estaba segura de a dónde iría. Pero no todos están seguros a dónde morarán cuando se vayan de esta tierra, por eso, debemos reflexionar y preparar todo para ese momento, y saber que hay solución incluso para la muerte.

>Nana vieja was not afraid to die, she knew that her time would come and she tried to make life a little easier for her beloved granddaughter, the person she loved most in this life. Everything she made, bought or created in her last stage of life was to share with Chanchita. Nana vieja was clear that, when she left this earthly plane, she would take nothing with her, she would leave it to her granddaughter and she would continue on this earth, that is why she cared for her. She knew that her life would go on in the afterlife, she was sure where she would go. But not everyone is sure where they will dwell when they leave this earth, therefore, we must reflect and prepare everything for that moment, and know that there is a solution even for death.

Estas y otras muchas conclusiones se podrían desprender de esta hermosa historia. No me malinterpreten, soy de las que piensan que la literatura tiene como fin principal el de _RECREAR_ al lector; pero, sin duda, los adultos que nos encanta leer y filosofar, hacemos este acto de saborear las historias casi de inmediato, y más cuando son tan deliciosas y emotivas. #QuienDijoQueSoloSonParaNinos.
