저에게 K-웹툰에 대한 가장 큰 놀라움은 얼마나 쉽게 빠져들 수 있고 얼마나 중독성이 강한지입니다. 그것의 세로 스크롤 구조는 특히 휴대폰에서 읽기에 좋습니다. 확대하거나 뒤집을 필요가 없습니다. 그냥 스크롤하면 되고, 이야기가 자연스럽게 펼쳐지게 두세요. 그리고 이야기들은? 생각보다 훨씬 더 감정적이고 복잡해요. 귀여운 고등학교 드라마를 읽을 줄 알았는데, 이 웹툰들은 정말 깊어요. 그들은 정체성, 불안, 두려움, 관계와 같은 진짜 문제들을 다루어요 — 앱을 닫고 나서도 오랫동안 마음에 남는 것들이죠.

**스위트홈**은 내가 읽은 두 번째 웹툰이었고, 솔직히 말해서 나는 준비가 안 되었었어. 공포, 스릴러, 그리고 인간 감정을 강하게 혼합한 작품이었어요. 캐릭터들의 외로움, 은유로서의 괴물들, 글쓰기 — 정말로 생생하게 느껴졌어요. 지금도 가슴이 얼마나 빨리 뛰었는지 기억나요. 다음에 무슨 일이 일어날지 알기 위해 충분히 빨리 읽을 수 없었어요. 템플과 용감한 의사의 일기는 영화를 보는 것 같았지만, 더 좋았다. 왜냐하면 내가 여유롭게 읽고 모든 세부 사항을 흡수할 수 있었기 때문이다.

그때 **나 혼자만 레벨업**을 발견했어요. 그때 나는 K-웹툰의 미친 세계를 정말로 이해하게 되었어요. 예를 들어, 그림체, 전개 속도, 캐릭터 발전, 정말 아드레날린이 솟구쳤어. 진우가 레벨업할 때마다 강해지고 똑똑해지는 걸 보는 건 정말 소름이 돋았어, 진짜. 그건 단순히 괴물과 싸우는 것 이상이었어. 자신이 가능하다고 생각했던 것에 도전하고 조금 더 나아가는 것이었습니다. 나는 그 모든 순간을 사랑했어. 그리고 단순히 저를 즐겁게 한 것이 아니라, 제 행동에 대해 부끄러움을 느끼게 했어요. 그게 참 이상하죠, 그렇죠? I didn’t grow up reading comics or manga, so webtoons weren’t something I really saw. Then late one night, I was mindlessly scrolling through my phone and decided to try one. I began with **True Beauty**, and that one little decision ushered me into an entirely new world.

The biggest surprise about K-Webtoons for me is how easy they are to get into and how addictive they become. Its vertical scrolling structure is good for reading, particularly on a phone. There is no need to zoom in or flip anything. You simply scroll, and let the story unruffled. And the stories? A lot more emotional and layered than I thought. I assumed I’d be reading cute high school drama, but these webtoons get deep. They touch on identity, insecurity, fear, relationships — real stuff that stays with you long after you’ve closed the app.

**Sweet Home** was the second webtoon I read and honestly, I was not ready. It combined horror, thriller, and human emotion in such a strong mix. The loneliness of the characters, the monsters-as-metaphors, the writing — it just felt so alive. I can still remember how fast my heart was racing at times. I couldn’t read fast enough to find out what would happen next. Temple and the plucky doctor’s journal felt like watching a movie, but better, because I was allowed to read it at my leisure and absorb every detail.

Then I found **Solo Leveling**. That’s when I really understood the crazy world of K-Webtoons. Like, the art, the pacing, the character development, it was straight adrenaline. Seeing Jin-Woo get stronger and smarter with each level up was like getting goosebumps man. It was more than just monster fighting. It was about challenging yourself to what you thought was possible and doing a little more. I loved every second of it. And it didn’t just entertain me — it actually made me feel ashamed of my own behavior. Strange how that works, right? What strikes me most about K-Webtoons is that they don’t just entertain you. They make you think. They can discuss mental health, friendship, love and self-worth without it seeming unnatural. The way they blend fantasy and just like real-life things that people go through, it’s honestly genius. Even secondary characters are well rounded, and the art makes the story come alive. There are times when I just stop on a panel to gaze at how gorgeous it is. I’ve also learned how accessible webtoons are. The vast majority are free to read, and many are translated into other languages. This is probably the reason they are becoming popular everywhere in the world. You don’t have to be Korean, or even be familiar with the Korean language, to relate to the emotions in the stories. And I’ve gotten more in touch with Korean culture as a result. Just from reading, I’ve learned a few Korean words or phrases, and grasped some cultural habits. Getting into this competition gave me the absolute perfect excuse to write about something I actually enjoy. At first I was a bit freaked out, but now I’m just feeling so grateful to be part of a community that loves K content like this so much.
