En las neblinosas calles de un Londres victoriano, el abogado Utterson persigue una sombra: Edward Hyde. ¿Por qué el ejemplar Dr. Jekyll ha legado su fortuna a un monstruo? Una historia de misterio que desciende a los abismos de la psique humana, donde la ciencia desafía a la moral y el precio de la libertad es la propia alma. Un abogado, Gabriel Utterson, investiga la extraña relación entre su viejo amigo Jekyll y un hombre violento y deforme llamado Hyde. A través de testamentos sospechosos y crímenes atroces, la verdad se revela: Jekyll y Hyde son la misma persona, luchando por el dominio de un solo cuerpo. 💭RESUMEN BREVE💭

El libro inicia con el personaje Utterson teniendo una conversación y una posterior caminata con su primo Richard Enfield. Durante el recorrido, su primo le cuenta un incidente que dejó ver lo peor de un hombre en medio de la calle, ya que este tropezaría y posteriormente pisotearía a una pequeña niña quien estaba en busca de un médico para acudir a una emergencia familiar. El alboroto no solo alertó a los familiares de la niña que se aproximaron, sino también al doctor y a los transeúntes. El hombre, en vez de disculparse, se comportó de una forma tan desagradable que las personas a su alrededor querían sucumbir a la violencia. Sin embargo, una propuesta de pagar una indemnización por el incidente fue elegida y el desagradable hombre pagó con un cheque cuya firma era de un amigo del señor Utterson. Cuando la familia fue al día siguiente a cobrar el cheque, con sospechas de que era falso, la transacción se hizo efectiva sin ningún inconveniente: la firma era real. Utterson, quien lleva de profesión los asuntos legales de diferentes clientes y entre ellos el de su amigo Henry Jekyll, propietario de la firma del cheque, desarrolla una preocupación por el relato de su primo. El hombre desagradable y malicioso llevaba por nombre Mr. Hyde, quien también aparece en el testamento de Henry Jekyll, un respetado doctor en sociedad y de muy buenos modales. Utterson, tras años de conocer a Jekyll, jamás había oído o conocido a Mr. Hyde, hasta que el dr. le cediera todo su legado en su testamento prematuro y luego con el relato del cheque. Resulta que el hombre, bajo y de rostro escalofriante, entraba y salía de la parte trasera de la residencia del dr. Jekyll, un apartado reservado para un laboratorio antiguo. Tras la incomodidad de la relación entre un hombre respetable y uno desagradable, Utterson decide conocer a Mr. Hyde prácticamente montando guardia en la esquina que conduce a la puerta del laboratorio. En cuanto intercambian palabras incómodas, Utterson no entiende cómo esa clase de persona, con una malicia exteriorizada que hace a todos sentirse incómodos, puede ser el elegido para heredar los bienes y dinero del dr. Jekyll. Un año más tarde, un parlamentario es asesinado por Mr. Hyde usando su bastón como arma homicida, dándole fuertes golpes en la cabeza. La escena fue vista por una sirvienta quien lo describe como un arrebato violento, después de que sir Danvers Carew se le acerca a Mr. Hyde. La policía intenta encontrar en vano al sospechoso, pero el Sr. Hyde parece haber desaparecido y el dr. Jekyll le da a entender a Utterson que ha cortado lazos con el criminal. Pero Utterson y un amigo experto en lexicografía comparan una nota de Jekyll y una de Hyde, dandose cuenta de que ambas tienen tecnicamente la misma letra, pero ambos deciden guardarse ese dato para si mismos. Más adelante, Jekyll retoma las reuniones con Utterson restableciendo su normalidad social. Hasta que de forma abrupta Jekyll se encierra en su laboratorio, no acepta visitas y preocupa a sus empleados. Por otra parte, el doctor Lanyon, quien era amigo tanto de Utterson como de Jekyll y quien progresivamente se fue alejando de Jekyll en particular, cae enfermo y muere en poco tiempo; nadie comprende bien cuál ha sido la causa. Días después y con la situación aún más preocupante, Poole, el servidor leal desde hace décadas del dr. Jekyll, acude a donde Utterson. Este le comenta lo preocupados que están por el dr. Jekyll y que sospecha que otra persona lo tiene encerrado en el laboratorio; no reconoce su voz y creen que incluso Mr. Hyde esté involucrado. También añade que le ha mandado a Poole a buscar una sal específica para sus experimentos, pero que ninguna parece ser suficiente. Utterson decide acompañar a Poole a la residencia de Jekyll y, cuando llegan, todos los empleados están aterrorizados con la persona escondida dentro del laboratorio; escuchan gritos y cosas romperse. Utterson llama a la puerta del laboratorio junto con Poole; en una súplica, Jekyll le pide que no entre, pero decididos, Poole y Utterson derriban la puerta. Al entrar, consiguen a Hyde muerto. Utterson encuentra una carta del dr. Lanyon describiendo que un día había recibido una petición por escrito de Jekyll; le pedía que consiguiera unos ingredientes y que lo esperaba a una hora exacta. Lanyon con zozobra lo hizo; Hyde apareció en casa de Lanyon y frente a sus ojos, tras ingerir la pócima, se convirtió en Jekyll, quien le explicaría todo a Lanyon. Este último, debido al shock y al perturbador modo de romper con la moral del uso de la ciencia, además de condenar como aberración el experimento de Jekyll, cae enfermo días después y fallece más tarde. Por último, Utterson lee las confesiones escritas con toda prisa de Jekyll y cuenta el proceso de su experimento, su éxito en el que su parte malévola lograba separarse de su cuerpo. Al inicio era tan pequeño y deforme porque la maldad en él no era tanta, pero a medida que se repetía la separación de las partes gracias a la pócima con una sal específica, esta parte malévola crecía y se fortalecía. Jekyll le había dado nombre propio, “Hyde”, y él podía vivir tranquilo mientras esa parte de él que tenía malas intenciones y deseos violentos se liberaba haciendo lo que quisiera. Una solución a largo plazo es que, debido a que Hyde era más joven que Jekyll, el dr. podría fallecer antes que su lado malo materializado, por lo que había resuelto heredarle sus bienes y fortuna a Hyde. Incluso había alquilado un sitio propio con una decoración que reflejaba la personalidad de Hyde. La situación se agravó cuando, tras el asesinato del parlamentario, Jekyll decide que es momento de parar y que si se descubre podrían vincularlo con el criminal. Sin embargo, un día paseando por una plaza, su cuerpo comienza a cambiar sin previo aviso, convirtiéndose en Hyde. En un apuro, acude a Lanyon quien termina enterándose de la situación y corta lazos con Jekyll. Luego de eso las pócimas no eran suficientes para evitar transformarse; Hyde ya no quería depender de Jekyll. Finalmente, en un sufrimiento físico y psicológico en una batalla entre ambas partes, Jekyll aprovecha el corto tiempo en el que Hyde está fuera de combate dentro de sí mismo y redacta su confesión, aparte de nombrar como nuevo dueño de sus bienes y fortuna a Utterson. Jekyll decide suicidarse con el poco tiempo que tiene y antes de que Utterson y Poole irrumpan en el viejo laboratorio. Fin.

💭MENSAJE CENTRAL💭

La imposibilidad de separar quirúrgicamente el bien del mal en el hombre; la dualidad es parte esencial de la condición humana y negarla u ocultarla bajo la hipocresía social solo alimenta al "monstruo".

💭OPINIÓN PERSONAL💭

Me encantó este libro, no solo por la lucha interna del personaje, sino también porque trata temas como la hipocresía en la sociedad y cómo deciden actuar las personas ante una situación compleja que puede perjudicarlos. Por ejemplo, al inicio se muestra que lo más lógico es que se lleve a la policía a Hyde por pisotear a la niña, pero en cambio la costumbre es arreglarlo pagando a los afectados. Más adelante, cuando el abogado Utterson y su amigo experto en lexicografía descubren que tanto la letra de Hyde como la letra de Jekyll son la misma y existe una confusión con evidencia clave, estos deciden no hacer nada, "lo dejan estar". Esto es un claro ejemplo de "no es nuestro asunto, mejor dejarlo así", a pesar de que había un asesinato de por medio. Esto incluye también al doctor Lanyon, quien incluso en su shock moral y espiritual por la aberración científica que había logrado Jekyll, este tampoco decide exponerlo y muere descompensado y desmoralizado días después. Por otro lado, el miedo más fuerte de Jekyll era que se supiera que Hyde y sus acciones eran su culpa, lo que podría repercutir en su reputación. No buscó ningún tipo de ayuda, porque aparte de querer lidiar con ello solo, también suponía aceptar que lo que hizo estaba mal, romper los límites morales y éticos en la ciencia, además de ocasionar la muerte de un hombre indirectamente por su mano pero bajo su responsabilidad; era una culpa que Jekyll no podía aguantar. Al final, no cometió suicidio para proteger al mundo de la maldad de Hyde, sino para no manchar su propio nombre y mantener ocultas sus malas acciones. Y en un último segundo de conciencia, Jekyll logra suicidarse antes de que Hyde vuelva a tomar el control y desaparecer por completo. Para culminar, si bien Utterson investiga a Hyde, se preocupa por Jekyll e intenta descubrir lo que está pasando, no toma ninguna acción importante sino hasta el final. Y resulta un poco hipócrita e irónico que el que sabía que algo estaba mal, pero guardó silencio a pesar de todo, es quien termina heredando la fortuna de Jekyll. Por lo tanto, una de sus interpretaciones alude a que gracias a su silencio se logró en parte mantener las apariencias y la reputación de Jekyll, para luego salir ganando aun sin quererlo ni planearlo. En fin, es un libro corto, que se lee muy rápidamente y da mucho en qué pensar.

Moderado a Rápido. Al ser una novela corta, no pierde tiempo en descripciones innecesarias. El ritmo es de "investigación" (lento al inicio) pero acelera drásticamente desde el asesinato de Carew hasta el clímax en el laboratorio.

💭TIPO DE NARRADOR💭

Múltiple. Comienza con un narrador en tercera persona omnisciente centrado en Utterson (para mantener el misterio). Finaliza con narradores en primera persona (Lanyon y Jekyll) a través de cartas. Esto permite que el lector descubra la verdad al mismo tiempo que los personajes. * * *

💭BRIEF SUMMARY💭

The book begins with the character Utterson having a conversation and then going for a walk with his cousin Richard Enfield. During the walk, his cousin tells him about an incident that revealed the worst in a man in the middle of the street, as he tripped and then trampled on a little girl who was looking for a doctor to attend to a family emergency. The commotion alerted not only the girl's relatives, who rushed over, but also the doctor and passersby. Instead of apologizing, the man behaved so unpleasantly that those around him wanted to resort to violence. However, a proposal to pay compensation for the incident was chosen, and the unpleasant man paid with a check signed by a friend of Mr. Utterson. When the family went the next day to cash the check, suspecting it was fake, the transaction went through without any problems: the signature was real. Utterson, who handles the legal affairs of various clients, including his friend Henry Jekyll, the owner of the check, becomes concerned about his cousin's story. The unpleasant and malicious man was named Mr. Hyde, who also appears in the will of Henry Jekyll, a respected doctor in society and a man of very good manners. Utterson, after years of knowing Jekyll, had never heard of or met Mr. Hyde, until the doctor left him his entire estate in his premature will and then with the story of the check. It turns out that the man, short and with a chilling face, would come and go from the back of Dr. Jekyll's residence, a section reserved for an old laboratory. After the awkwardness of the relationship between a respectable man and a disagreeable one, Utterson decides to meet Mr. Hyde by practically standing guard on the corner leading to the laboratory door. As soon as they exchange awkward words, Utterson cannot understand how such a person, with an outward malice that makes everyone feel uncomfortable, could be chosen to inherit Dr. Jekyll's property and money. A year later, a parliamentarian is murdered by Mr. Hyde using his cane as a murder weapon, striking him repeatedly on the head. The scene was witnessed by a maid who describes it as a violent outburst after Sir Danvers Carew approaches Mr. Hyde. The police try in vain to find the suspect, but Mr. Hyde seems to have disappeared, and Dr. Jekyll implies to Utterson that he has severed ties with the criminal. But Utterson and a friend who is an expert in lexicography compare a note from Jekyll and one from Hyde, realizing that both have technically the same handwriting, but they both decide to keep this information to themselves. Later, Jekyll resumes his meetings with Utterson, restoring his social normality. Until, abruptly, Jekyll locks himself in his laboratory, refuses visitors, and worries his employees. Meanwhile, Dr. Lanyon, who was a friend of both Utterson and Jekyll and who had gradually distanced himself from Jekyll in particular, falls ill and dies shortly thereafter; no one understands exactly what caused his death. Days later, with the situation even more troubling, Poole, Dr. Jekyll's loyal servant of decades, goes to see Utterson. He tells him how worried they are about Dr. Jekyll and that he suspects someone else has locked him in the laboratory; he does not recognize his voice and they believe that even Mr. Hyde may be involved. He also adds that he has sent Poole to find a specific salt for his experiments, but that none seem to be sufficient. Utterson decides to accompany Poole to Jekyll's residence, and when they arrive, all the employees are terrified of the person hiding inside the laboratory; they hear screams and things breaking. Utterson knocks on the laboratory door with Poole; Jekyll begs him not to enter, but Poole and Utterson are determined and break down the door. Upon entering, they find Hyde dead. Utterson finds a letter from Dr. Lanyon describing how one day he had received a written request from Jekyll, asking him to obtain some ingredients and wait for him at a specific time. Lanyon anxiously did so. Hyde appeared at Lanyon's house and, before his eyes, after ingesting the potion, turned into Jekyll, who explained everything to Lanyon. A long-term solution was that, since Hyde was younger than Jekyll, the doctor could die before his evil side materialized, so he had decided to bequeath his property and fortune to Hyde. He had even rented a place of his own with décor that reflected Hyde's personality. The situation worsened when, after the murder of the parliamentarian, Jekyll decided that it was time to stop and that if he were discovered, he could be linked to the criminal. However, one day while walking through a square, his body began to change without warning, turning into Hyde. In a hurry, he went to Lanyon, who ended up finding out about the situation and cut ties with Jekyll. After that, the potions were not enough to prevent the transformation; Hyde no longer wanted to depend on Jekyll. Finally, in physical and psychological suffering in a battle between both sides, Jekyll takes advantage of the short time Hyde is out of action inside himself and writes his confession, as well as naming Utterson as the new owner of his property and fortune. Jekyll decides to commit suicide with the little time he has left and before Utterson and Poole break into the old laboratory. The end.

I loved this book, not only because of the character's internal struggle, but also because it deals with issues such as hypocrisy in society and how people decide to act in complex situations that could harm them. For example, at the beginning, it is shown that the most logical thing to do would be to take Hyde to the police for trampling on the girl, but instead, the custom is to settle the matter by paying those affected. Later, when lawyer Utterson and his friend, an expert in lexicography, discover that Hyde's handwriting is the same as Jekyll's and there is confusion about key evidence, they decide to do nothing, to “let it be.” This is a clear example of “it's not our business, better to leave it at that,” even though there was a murder involved. This also includes Dr. Lanyon, who, even in his moral and spiritual shock at the scientific aberration that Jekyll had achieved, also decides not to expose him and dies unbalanced and demoralized days later. On the other hand, Jekyll's strongest fear was that it would become known that Hyde and his actions were his fault, which could affect his reputation. He did not seek any help because, apart from wanting to deal with it alone, it also meant accepting that what he had done was wrong, breaking moral and ethical boundaries in science, as well as indirectly causing the death of a man by his own hand but under his responsibility; it was a guilt that Jekyll could not bear. In the end, he did not commit suicide to protect the world from Hyde's evil, but to avoid tarnishing his own name and to keep his misdeeds hidden. And in a last second of consciousness, Jekyll manages to kill himself before Hyde regains control and disappears completely. To conclude, although Utterson investigates Hyde, he worries about Jekyll and tries to find out what is going on, he does not take any significant action until the end. And it is a little hypocritical and ironic that the one who knew something was wrong but remained silent despite everything is the one who ends up inheriting Jekyll's fortune. Therefore, one interpretation suggests that thanks to his silence, Jekyll's appearances and reputation were partly maintained, and he ended up winning even without wanting or planning to. In short, it is a short book that can be read very quickly and gives a lot to think about.
