Capítulo 1.1

Miré sobre mi hombro, recto, como quien busca un insecto caminando en él. Observé detenidamente, sin ver nada fuera de lo normal, aunque la sensación seguía allí. Agudizar la vista acentuó mi oído, dominando mi atención por completo. Escuché, a lo lejos, pasos pesados, como botas hundiéndose en el fango. Mis sentidos se mezclaron en uno, haciéndome sentir como un depredador… solo para descubrir que era la presa. Me resentía como un conejo en la mira del cazador. Los pasos seguían ahí. ¡Poff! ¡Poff! Uno tras otro, rítmicos, repetitivos. Pof… pof… pof… El sonido desagradable e hipnótico me llevó a un estado paranoico. Mientras los pasos se apresuraban, ya no quedaba duda, salvo la de quién —o qué— me perseguía. Las luces tenues de los candiles públicos bañaban la húmeda vereda como la luna llena deposita sus destellos sobre un sendero amazónico. La vereda reflejaba las paredes altas de casas sin puertas ni ventanas, nacidas de los cortes del camino. Una secuencia inalterable, un sinfín de fachadas multicolor, una tras otra, como un carrusel infinito. Pof… pof… pof… Los pasos se aceleraban. Todo ese conjunto resultaba agobiante. ¿Final? Simplemente no se veía. La claustrofobia era la palabra que me acompañaba en ese camino constante. Sin perder el paso, seguí adelante. Una marcha continua, lenta, con alma de carrera. Caminaba sin poder avanzar. Todo era como una cinta caminadora: por más que me moviera, seguía en el mismo lugar. Corría desesperado, siempre en el mismo sitio. Pof… pof… pof… Perseguido por algo que me erizaba la piel, que hacía que un calambre subcutáneo recorriera todo mi cuerpo, dándole ese toque de frío espantoso y tenebroso. Una gota de sudor se reunió en la base de mi oreja y recorrió mi espalda. Eso estaba por llegar, por poner su mano en mi hombro. Pof… pof… pof… pof… Mi instinto más primitivo tomó el control. Me empujó a correr más rápido de lo que podía. Las paredes y el piso, como un todo, me envolvían en un torbellino veloz, en sentido contrario a mi penosa huida. Dejé atrás la lógica y la razón, actuando solo por impulso, justo después de voltear mis sentidos y cada parte de mi cuerpo. Lo hice. Me volteé tan rápido que todo se detuvo, como si el mundo necesitara reorganizar su sentido. Y yo… lo que sentí fue un fuerte golpe. Desperté sobresaltado en mi cama. Mi pecho subía y bajaba como si hubiera corrido kilómetros. Estaba empapado en sudor, jadeando, con los músculos tensos y el corazón golpeando como un tambor de guerra. Me senté al borde de la cama, intentando recuperar el aliento. La habitación era la mía, pero no se sentía como tal. Todo parecía más oscuro, más pesado. Me llevé las manos al rostro. No había descanso. Solo el eco de los pasos aún resonando en mi cabeza. Pof… pof… pof… Y entonces, silencio.

Capítulo 1.2

La desagradable e hipnótica cadencia de las pisadas me arrastró a un estado de paranoia. Los pasos se apresuraban, solo me quedaba una duda: ¿quién o qué me estaba persiguiendo? Las tenues luces de los faroles públicos bañaban la vereda húmeda, como si la luz de una luna llena se depositara sobre un sendero amazónico. En el reflejo de la vereda se alzaban las paredes altas de casas sin puertas ni ventanas, naciendo directamente de los cortes del camino. Era una secuencia inalterable, un sinfín de fachadas multicolores, una tras otra, como un carrusel que se repite infinitamente. ¡Pof! ¡Pof! ¡Pof! Los pasos se seguían apresurando. Todo ese conjunto era agobiante. ¿Qué final tenía? Simplemente, no se le veía. Claustrofobia, esa era la palabra que me acompañaba en ese camino constante. Sin perder el ritmo, seguía adelante. Una marcha continua, lenta, pero con alma de carrera. Caminaba sin poder avanzar. Todo era como una cinta caminadora; camino y sigo en el mismo lugar. No importaba lo rápido que lo hiciera o el ritmo de mis pasos, estaba corriendo desesperado, siempre en el mismo lugar. ¡Pof!... ¡Pof!... ¡Pof!... Me perseguía algo que me ponía la piel de gallina, que hacía que un pequeño calambre subcutáneo recorriera toda mi piel, erizándola y dándole ese toque de frío espantoso y tenebroso. Una gota de sudor logró reunirse en la base de mi oreja y recorrió mi espalda. Eso estaba por llegar, por poner su mano en mi hombro. ¡Pof!... ¡Pof!... ¡Pof!... ¡Pof!... Mi instinto más primitivo salió a dominar todas mis acciones, empujándome a correr aún más rápido de lo que podía. Las paredes y el piso, como un todo, me envolvieron en un torbellino muy veloz, yendo en sentido contrario a mi penosa huida. Dejé de lado toda lógica y razón, actuando solo por impulso, justo después de voltear mis sentidos y cada parte de mi cuerpo. Lo hice. Me volteé tan rápido que todo se detuvo para reorganizar su sentido, y lo que sentí fue un fuerte golpe justo al despertarme, sobresaltado en mi cama. No había descanso. Solo el eco de los pasos aún resonando en mi cabeza. Pof… pof… pof… no hubo revelación. No hubo rostro. Solo un golpe seco, como si el mundo me hubiera arrojado contra sí mismo. Desperté sobresaltado en mi cama.

Capítulo 01.3

Me incorporé en la cama con un jadeo ahogado, sintiendo un dolor agudo y punzante en el pecho, como si la caída del sueño me hubiera dejado una contusión real. Mi cuerpo entero estaba empapado en sudor frío, y las sábanas se sentían pegajosas contra mi piel. Me llevé una mano a la cabeza, intentando detener el eco ensordecedor de los tambores que aún resonaban en mis sienes. No era mi corazón. Era el trauma del despertar. "Solo es un sueño," musité, mi voz temblando a pesar de la firmeza que intentaba proyectar. "Solo fue una pesadilla, producto del estrés y el cansancio." La oscuridad era densa, pero familiar. Me froté los ojos con las palmas y revisé la habitación. El ventilador, el escritorio lleno de bocetos de arquitectura, la ropa tirada. Todo en su lugar. No había laberintos, ni muros de arbustos, ni la figura sombría del perseguidor. Era real. Estaba a salvo. Me levanté y caminé a tientas hacia la cocina. El piso frío bajo mis pies fue un ancla bienvenida. Bebí agua directamente del grifo, a grandes tragos, intentando lavar la sensación de fango y miedo de mi garganta. La necesidad de ayuda, el pensamiento desespe.

Cerré los ojos, pero mi mente seguía en el torbellino. Volví a escuchar, a lo lejos, esos pasos pesados, lentos, pero con una cadencia que me perforaba el oído. ¡Pof! ¡Pof! ¡Pof!... Intenté ignorarlos. Estoy despierto, estoy en mi cama, me repetía. Pero el ritmo era implacable y el silencio de mi habitación solo lo amplificaba. Mis ojos se abrieron de golpe, pero la oscuridad era total. Apreté los párpados con fuerza, intentando borrar el sonido. ¡Pof!... ¡Pof!... ¡Pof!... Ya no estaba en mi habitación. Estaba en el laberinto de arbustos, sintiendo de nuevo la húmeda vereda bajo mis pies. La respiración se me aceleró, comprendiendo con una punzada helada que había vuelto. Había vuelto a ser la presa. Empecé a correr, pero el césped era interminable. Sentía la mirada sobre mi cuello, justo donde se habían reunido las gotas de sudor en la vereda. Corría tan rápido que las paredes del laberinto y el piso empezaron a girar en sentido contrario, más veloces de lo que podía avanzar. Cuanto más me esforzaba, más retrocedía. Parecía que todo a mi alrededor estaba a favor de mi perseguidor, de eso. Estaba por alcanzarme. Podía sentir el calor de su presencia justo detrás, el aliento invisible. De pronto, un grito. Una voz potente, desconocida, me gritaba: —¡DESPIERTA! La voz era tan real que caí boca abajo en el suelo, pero ya no sentía pasto ni barro. Sentí la dura superficie de mi colchón, mi cara aplastada contra la almohada. Quise moverme. Quise incorporarme. No pude. Estaba completamente paralizado. Apenas un hormigueo débil en la punta de mis dedos y los sollozos de mi respiración ahogada. En mi cabeza, solo se escuchaba el redoblar de tambores que imitaban mi corazón alterado. No podía hacer nada. Necesito ayuda, pensé desesperado. ¿De quién?, me pregunté. No sé, pero la necesito.

Capítulo 01.5: La Caída (Final)

El silencio, sin embargo, era peor que el eco. Era un hueco que la mente se negaba a llenar. —Solo es una pesadilla —me dije, mi voz rasposa, intentando que la lógica regresara a la habitación. Me levanté, sintiendo que mis articulaciones eran de plomo, con esa pesadez que deja el sueño incompleto. Caminé a tientas hacia la puerta, tropecé con el ventilador al lado de la cama —casi me mato—, pero logré abrir. Salí al pasillo, fui a la cocina, bebí agua helada directo de la botella. Solo quería regresar a la cama, hundirme en el olvido, en un sueño sin imágenes. Al volver, el aire en el cuarto se sentía denso y frío. Cerré la puerta, asegurándola con el cerrojo, y me giré hacia el lecho. En la penumbra, vi la silueta. Alguien estaba acostado en mi cama. Una figura inmóvil, demasiado corpulenta para ser yo, extrañamente familiar. No era Clarice; era un bulto que no debería estar allí. La adrenalina, que había huido con el despertar, regresó con un golpe seco en el estómago. Lo sujeté por un tobillo para arrastrarlo fuera y exigirle explicaciones a gritos. Pero no hubo forcejeo, solo un violento tirón en la cabeza al mismo tiempo que el aire abandonaba mis pulmones. El golpe. El mismo golpe del final de la vereda, el impacto que detuvo el torbellino. Abrí los ojos y el dolor me inundó. No estaba en la cama, sino tirado en el suelo, al lado de ella. Caí de la cama al despertar. Y fue ahí donde el sueño se fusionó con el despertar, porque a pesar del frío del suelo y el dolor punzante, no podía moverme. Estaba totalmente entumecido. Lo único real era el peso. Un gran peso en mi pecho que se hacía más fuerte mientras más luchaba. Intenté gritar, pero solo el alarido sordo en mi mente respondía. La presión crecía, grande y sofocante, la sensación de estar atado, atrapado, paralizado. La Sombra, el algo que me perseguía con pasos de fango, ahora me tenía sujeto, inmovilizado. Y en mi mente, solo el eco ensordecedor de mi propia voz gritando: "Necesito ayuda, ¿de quién?, no sé, pero la necesito." Entonces, justo cuando el terror prometía el desmayo, un sonido agudo y monótono rompió el hechizo. La alarma de las 6:00 a.m. sonando incesante. El peso se esfumó. El entumecimiento se disolvió en un hormigueo eléctrico. Me incorporé, jadeando, el dolor del impacto en el suelo real. Me quedé sentado, con la espalda apoyada en el colchón, sudoroso. Miré el despertador. Eran las seis de la mañana.

Un día nuevo. El primer día de una pesadilla que se negaba a terminar al abrir los ojos.

The Fall

Chapter 1.1 ----------- I looked over my shoulder, straight ahead, like someone looking for an insect crawling on it. I observed carefully, seeing nothing out of the ordinary, although the sensation was still there. Sharpening my vision sharpened my hearing, dominating my attention completely. I heard, in the distance, heavy footsteps, like boots sinking into the mud. My senses blended into one, making me feel like a predator… only to discover I was the prey. I resented them like a rabbit in a hunter's sights. The footsteps were still there. Poff! Poff! One after another, rhythmic, repetitive. Poff… poff… poff… The unpleasant, hypnotic sound drove me into a paranoid state. As the footsteps quickened, there was no longer any doubt, except that of who—or what—was chasing me. The dim lights of the street lamps bathed the damp sidewalk like a full moon casts its glimmering light on an Amazonian trail. The sidewalk reflected the tall walls of houses without doors or windows, born from the cuts in the road. An unchanging sequence, an endless array of multicolored facades, one after another, like an infinite carousel. Pof… pof… pof… The footsteps quickened. The whole complex was overwhelming. An end? I simply couldn't see it. Claustrophobia was the word that accompanied me on that constant path. Without losing my stride, I continued forward. A continuous, slow march, with the spirit of a race. I walked, unable to advance. Everything was like a treadmill: no matter how much I moved, I stayed in the same place. I ran desperately, always in the same place. Pof… pof… pof… Pursued by something that made my skin crawl, that made a subcutaneous cramp run through my body, giving it that touch of terrifying, gloomy cold. A drop of sweat gathered at the base of my ear and ran down my back. That was coming, to put his hand on my shoulder. Pof... pof... pof... pof... My most primitive instinct took control. It pushed me to run faster than I could. The walls and the floor, as a whole, enveloped me in a swift whirlwind, in the opposite direction of my painful escape. I left logic and reason behind, acting only on impulse, just after turning my senses and every part of my body around. I did it. I turned around so fast that everything stopped, as if the world needed to reorganize its meaning. And I... what I felt was a strong blow. I woke up with a start in my bed. My chest rose and fell as if I'd run for miles. I was drenched in sweat, panting, my muscles tense, and my heart pounding like a war drum. I sat on the edge of the bed, trying to catch my breath. The room was mine, but it didn't feel like it. Everything seemed darker, heavier. I brought my hands to my face. There was no rest. Only the echo of footsteps still ringing in my head. Pof… pof… pof… And then, silence.

Chapter 1.2

The unpleasant, hypnotic cadence of footsteps dragged me into a state of paranoia. The footsteps hurried, and I only had one question: who or what was chasing me? The dim lights of the street lamps bathed the damp sidewalk, as if the light of a full moon had fallen on an Amazonian trail. In the reflection of the sidewalk, the tall walls of houses without doors or windows rose directly from the ditches in the road. It was an unchanging sequence, an endless stream of multicolored facades, one after the other, like a carousel that repeats itself endlessly. Poof! Poof! Poof! The footsteps continued to quicken. The whole complex was overwhelming. What was the end? I simply couldn't see it. Claustrophobia, that was the word that accompanied me on that constant path. Without losing my rhythm, I kept going. A continuous march, slow, but with the spirit of a race. I walked, unable to move forward. Everything was like a treadmill; I walked and stayed in the same place. No matter how fast I went or the pace of my steps, I was running desperately, always in the same place. Poof!... Poof!... Poof!... Something was chasing me, making my skin crawl, making a small subcutaneous cramp run all over my skin, raising it and giving it that terrifying, sinister touch of cold. A drop of sweat managed to gather at the base of my ear and run down my back. It was about to come, to put its hand on my shoulder. Poof!... Poof!... Poof!... Poof!... My most primitive instinct took over, pushing me to run even faster than I could. The walls and the floor, as a whole, enveloped me in a very fast whirlwind, going in the opposite direction to my painful escape. I cast aside all logic and reason, acting solely on impulse, immediately after turning my senses and every part of my body upside down. I did it. I turned around so fast that everything stopped to reorganize its meaning, and what I felt was a loud bang just as I woke up, startled in my bed. Chapter 1.3

I sat up in bed with a stifled gasp, feeling a sharp, stabbing pain in my chest, as if falling asleep had left me with a real bruise. My entire body was drenched in cold sweat, and the sheets felt sticky against my skin. I brought a hand to my head, trying to stop the deafening echo of the drums still pounding in my temples. It wasn't my heart. It was the trauma of waking up. "It's just a dream," I muttered, my voice shaking despite the firmness I tried to project. "It was just a nightmare, a product of stress and exhaustion." The darkness was dense, but familiar. I rubbed my eyes with my palms and scanned the room. The fan, the desk filled with architectural sketches, the scattered clothes. Everything was in its place. There were no mazes, no walls of bushes, no shadowy figure of the pursuer. It was real. I was safe. I got up and groped my way to the kitchen. The cold floor beneath my feet was a welcome anchor. I drank water straight from the tap, taking large gulps, trying to wash away the feeling of mud and fear in my throat. The need for help, the desperate thought.

Chapter 1.4

I closed my eyes, but my mind was still in turmoil. I heard again, in the distance, those heavy, slow footsteps, but with a cadence that pierced my ears. "Pof! Pof! Pof!"... I tried to ignore them. "I'm awake, I'm in my bed," I kept telling myself. But the rhythm was relentless, and the silence in my room only amplified it. My eyes flew open, but it was pitch black. I squeezed my eyelids shut, trying to blot out the sound. "Pof!"... "Pof!"... "Pof!"... I was no longer in my room. I was in the maze of bushes, feeling the damp path beneath my feet again. It seemed like everything around me was in favor of my pursuer, that's exactly what it was. He was about to catch me. I could feel the heat of his presence right behind me, his invisible breath. Suddenly, a scream. A powerful, unfamiliar voice was shouting at me: "WAKE UP!" The voice was so real that I fell face down on the ground, but I no longer felt the grass or mud. I felt the hard surface of my mattress, my face pressed against the pillow. I wanted to move. I wanted to sit up. I couldn't. I was completely paralyzed. There was just a faint tingling in my fingertips and the gasps of my stifled breaths. In my head, all I could hear was the beating of drums mimicking my pounding heart. I couldn't do anything. I need help, I thought desperately. From whom? I wondered. I don't know, but I need it.

The silence, however, was worse than the echo. It was a void my mind refused to fill. "It's just a nightmare," I told myself, my voice raspy, trying to force logic back into the room. I got up, feeling like my joints were made of lead, with that heaviness that comes from incomplete sleep. I groped toward the door, tripped over the fan next to the bed—it almost killed me—but I managed to open it. I went out into the hallway, went to the kitchen, and drank ice water straight from the bottle. I just wanted to go back to bed, sink into oblivion, into a dream without images. When I returned, the air in the room felt thick and cold. I closed the door, locked it, and turned toward the bed. In the dimness, I saw the silhouette. Someone was lying in my bed. A motionless figure, too large to be me, strangely familiar. It wasn't Clarice; it was a lump that shouldn't be there. The adrenaline, which had fled with the awakening, returned with a sharp blow to my stomach. I grabbed his ankle to drag him out and scream for an explanation. But there was no struggle, just a violent jerk to my head as the air left my lungs. The blow. The same blow at the end of the sidewalk, the impact that stopped the whirlwind. I opened my eyes and pain flooded me. I wasn't in bed, but lying on the floor next to her. I fell out of bed when I woke up. And that was where the dream merged with the awakening, because despite the cold of the floor and the stabbing pain, I couldn't move. I was completely numb. The only real thing was the weight. Then, just as terror promised fainting, a high-pitched, monotonous sound broke the spell. The 6:00 a.m. alarm clock ringing incessantly. The weight vanished. The numbness dissolved into an electric tingle. I sat up, gasping, the pain of impact with the ground real. I sat with my back against the mattress, sweating. I looked at the alarm clock. It was six in the morning.A new day. The first day of a nightmare that refused to end when I opened my eyes.
