El reloj había estado regresando las manecillas durante una hora, se dió la orden de apagar la maquinaria, las manecillas ahora se movían correctamente. Los científicos entre dudosos y emocionados se miraban mútuamente. Tantos obstáculos había enfrentado, tantos contratiempos; que le asustaba sobremanera que el último de ellos, por minúsculo que pareciera, fuese capaz de detenerlo. Elevó la palanca al máximo, ya no temblaba. Se podía oír el chillido de la maquinaria trabajando a toda potencia. Alfonzo esperaba paciente, con la entera seguridad de quien ha calculado todo. Pero había algo que no sabía, algo que no podía saber.
