Sebuah game fighting dengan tingkat popularitas yang luar biasa, gamer mana yang belum pernah mendengar nama Mortal Kombat sebelumnya. Berbeda dengan sebagian besar game fighting lain seperti Soul Calibur dan Street Fighter, misalnya, Mortal Kombat tampil sangat lugas merepresentasikan kekerasan dan kekejaman yang terjadi ketika dua petarung dengan kemampuan luar biasa saling bertukar pukulan dan tendangan. Ada satu ambisi yang cukup menarik ketika membicarakan Mortal Kombat. Plot cukup kompleks yang dipenuhi dengan beragam karakter ikonik yang tidak lekang dimakan masa memang mengandung potensi yang cukup besar untuk beragam proses adaptasi di luar identitas genre fightingnya. Proses rilis ulang sebagai sebuah film layar lebar di masa lalu juga berujung pada hasil akhir yang manis, bahkan pantas disebut sebagai salah satu film adaptasi game terbaik sepanjang sejarah. Jika harus jujur, dengan begitu banyak karakter yang mengambil model ninja dengan kemampuan bela diri tangan kosong dan jurus-jurus mematikan, Mortal Kombat juga sebenarnya bisa dirilis dalam format genre yang lain. Ide ini juga sempat terpikirkan oleh Midway dan mereka realisasikan dalam satu seri yang sempat dirilis di Nintendo 64 dan Playstation 1 – Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero.

Ninja dengan elemen es yang mampu membekukan lawan, menciptakan klon es, atau melakukan sliding super cepat untuk menyerang area bawah musuh ini memang menjadi salah satu karakter yang mendefinisikan franchise yang kini dipegang oleh Netherrealm Studios. Walaupun sempat hadir dalam beberapa varian bentuk, Sub-Zero adalah salah satu karakter yang selalu muncul di beragam seri MK, bersama dengan sang rival abadi – Scorpion. Mendalami latar belakang kisahnya tentu saja terdengar sebagai sebuah ide yang cukup menarik.

Terasa Seperti Mortal Kombat

Mengembangkan sebuah game fighting menjadi platformer 2D tentu bukan pekerjaan yang mudah, dan terlepas dari beragam cacat desain yang terjadi, Midway harus diakui berada di jalur yang benar. Anda memang akan dipaksa untuk melompat ke sana kemari sembari menghindari jurang atau jebakan yang siap untuk meremukkan tubuh Anda secara seketika, namun ketika bertemu dengan musuh yang harus ditundukkan, cita rasa Mortal Kombatnya terasa kentara. Kontrol gaya bertarung khas MK, dengan ekstra uppercut penuh darah, dan kesempatan untuk mengeksekusi serangan ikonik Sub-Zero semakin membuat sistem ini terasa sempurna. Sayangnya, dicederai dengan sistem kontrol lemah yang akan kita bahas nanti. Namun secara garis besar, keputusan untuk menghadirkan mekanik seperti ini memang sudah benar adanya.

Sistem Skill dan Experience Points

Yang mengejutkan, MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero hadir dengan ekstra sistem yang boleh terhitung cukup “modern” untuk sebuah game platformer. Tidak sekedar tampil dalam cita rasa klasik yang membuatnya tampil tak ubahnya Lomax atau Rayman, MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero juga menyematkan sistem experience points di dalamnya. Semakin banyak musuh yang berhasil Anda tundukkan, semakin banyak pula experience points yang Anda dapatkan. Berhasil mencapai jumlah tertentu, maka Anda akan membuka lebih banyak skill untuk dieksekusi, yang tentu saja, akan sangat membantu Anda dalam pertarungan, apalagi melawan para Boss yang tentu tidak akan mudah. Berawal dari bola es ikoniknya, Sub-Zero akan mempersenjatai diri dengan jurus yang lebih mematikan seiring dengan pengalaman yang ia dapatkan.

MK Universe

Diposisikan sebagai sebuah prekuel, Midway juga tidak main-main untuk memastikan bahwa game ini memang mengusung identitas sebagai bagian dari semesta Mortal Kombat itu sendiri. Tidak hanya sekedar dari cerita, tetapi juga dari beragam karakter ikonik MK yang ikut serta. Ia ikut membangun latar belakang yang lebih kuat lewat interaksi Sub-Zero dengan karakter-karakter ini, memberikan sedikit pemahaman ekstra tentang dinamika yang tercipta di timeline Mortal Kombat selanjutnya. Ada rasa puas tersendiri ketika menemukan bahwa sang rival abadi – Scorpion menjadi salah satu musuh besar pertama yang harus Anda tundukkan.

Password / Cheat Mode

Sebuah fitur video game klasik yang perlahan namun pasti, tidak lagi terlihat relevan di industri game modern saat ini. Namun cukup untuk membuat perasaan nosltagia terbangun kuat, mengembalikan kembali memori akan begitu banyak kerja keras untuk mengerjakannya Benar sekali, kita tengah membicarakan Cheat Password, yang ternyata masih diusung oleh MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero ini! Enam huruf acak untuk membuka beragam fungsi curang atau bahkan melompati level yang terasa sulit bagi Anda. Dengan koneksi internet yang begitu terbatas di masa lalu, satu-satunya untuk mengetahui kombinasiyang dibutuhkan adalah dengan membeli majalah-majalah game Indonesia yang di kala itu selalu menyertakan kolom khusus sendiri. Kami masih ingat jelas bahwa kami membuka majalah “Fantasi” untuk tahu isi cheat game ini. Oh, how much i miss that magazine!

Live Action Movie!

CGI super epik nan dramatis, ini menjadi salah satu format yang ditempuh oleh publisher dan developer masa kini untuk menunjukkan visi sinematik dari game yang mereka racik. Dengan teknologi modern ini, developer tidak hanya bisa menciptakan kualitas visual yang mendekati dunia nyata, namun mencapai totalitas untuk melemparkan visi apapun yang mereka inginkan di sana. Namun, format seperti ini masih terhitung sangat langka di era Playstation 1. MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero hadir dengan “inovasi” yang bahkan lebih gila dan tampil sangat klasik, sulit untuk dilupakan. Midway memutuskan untuk menyewa aktor sungguhan dan menjelaskan plot yang diusung lewat selingan film live-action yang tampil tak ubahnya opera sabun. Mungkin cukup menggelikan, namun terasa menarik ketika dimainkan kembali. Mengapa? Karena boleh dibilang, format seperti ini sudah mati.

Apa yang Kami Benci Dari MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero?

Dark Souls Bahela!

Anda merasa game tersulit sepanjang masa adalah Dark Souls? Maka Anda sudah pasti belum pernah memainkan MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero sebelumnya. Anda memang bisa memilih tingkat kesulitan yang lebih mudah dan tidak mengalami masalah yang berarti ketika bertarung, namun bukan itu alasannya Anda akan cepat merasa marah dan frustrasi ketika mencicipi game ini. Seperti halnya Dark Souls atau Flappy Bird, MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero tidak memberikan banyak ruang untuk Anda melakukan kesalahan, terutama ketika bergerak melewati platformer di dalam level. Salah langkah? Mati. Tidak sabar? Mati. Terlalu cepat melompat? Mati. Lupa platfomer bisa runtuh? Mati. Lupa ada tembok besar jatuh? Mati. Belum mati? Mati.

Kontrol Tidak Intuitif

Tingkat kesulitan yang tinggi pada MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero harus diakui, sebenarnya bukan karena niat Midway untuk menjadikan game ini sulit, tetapi lebih fakta pada cacat implementasi mekanik di sisi gameplay. Semua yang dibangun di elemen ini seolah diciptakan untuk membuat Anda tewas dengan cepat, atau meminalisir kontrol cepat Anda pada sosok Sub-Zero sendiri. Game platformer mana yang memiliki tombol tersendiri hanya untuk membalikkan tubuh karakter utamanya? Hanya MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero yang punya. Alih-alih sekedar menekan tombol mundur untuk membalikkan badan, Anda harus melakukannya secara terpisah. Masalah yang sama juga terjadi di tombol lari, yang selalu membuat Sub-Zero bergerak beberapa langkah di depan tujuan utama yang Anda inginkan. Ketika melakukan gerakan in di depan jebakan batu besar? Maka Anda bisa mati tanpa alasan.

Kamera Mimpi Buruk

Jika kontrol tidak intuitif sudah menjadi masalah tersendiri, kamera di MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero juga tidak banyak membantu. Apa yang paling penting bagi sebuah game platformer? Tentu saja menyediakan sudut pandang yang lebih luas bagi gamer, supaya mereka bisa memahami kemana mereka harus melompat dan melangkah, sesuatu yang berbeda dengan MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero. Alih-alih menarik kamera menjauh dan memperlihatkan rute yang harus Anda lalui, kamera justru bergerak mendekat dan menyorot sosok Sub-Zero dari dekat. Lalu kemana harus melangkah? Pertanyaan bagus, karena hal ini akan terus membuat Anda tewas secara konyol.

Animasi yang Berulang-Ulang

“Arrrgggghhhhhhh….” “Arggggghhhhhhhhh….” “ARGGGGHHHHHHHH…”, akan jadi teriakan yang secara konsisten Anda dengarkan ketika memainkan MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero ini. Untuk kematian karena ketinggian, MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero menyediakan satu animasi live-action dimana sosok Sub-Zero terlhat jatuh ke barisan awan dan berteriak kencang, setiap kali Anda tewas karena jatuh. Sekarang bayangkan hal ini dikombinasikan dengan kontrol tidak intuitif dan kamera yang menjadi mimpi buruk? Anda bisa saja mati 40 kali berturut-turut hanya dari sekedar berusaha melewati sebuah rintangan lompat yang bergerak dinamis. Sekarang bayangkan kalau Anda harus mendengar teriakan yang sama selama 40 kali berturut-turut. Mimpi buruk!

Tanpa Clue Sama Sekali!

Apa yang harus Anda lakukan untuk melakukan ini dan itu? MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero tidak akan memberikan clue dengan jelas kepada Anda, apa yang harus dilakukan untuk mencapai area selanjutnya. Anda akan seringkali bertemu dengan kondisi dimana Anda terdiam kebingungan, berusaha mencari alternatif solusi yang bisa ditempuh untuk mencapai progress permainan. Dan sebagian darinya akan berakhir buntu, sampai Anda menjajal proses trial dan error beragam metode dan mati berkali-kali. Salah satu contoh paling nyata adalah di awal checkpoint level 1? Buntu di sebuah area terbuka, desain level paling rasional memang meminta Anda untuk melompat ke bawah dan melanjutkan cerita. Namun apa yang terjadi ketika Anda melompat? Mati secara instan. Lalu, bagaimana caranya supaya bisa melompat ke bawah dan tidak tewas? Proses trial dan error terjadi, sampai Anda menemukan, bahwa Anda harus melompat denganposisi tubuh mengahdap ke belakang. Who would have thought about that..

Continue Terbatas

Masih belum cukup sulit dan frustrasi? Midway masih menyertakan sistem nyawa dan Continue terbatas di game ini, memaksa Anda untuk mengulang progress dari awal level jika keduanya mencapai angka 0. Mengulang satu level terus-menerus, berhadapan dengan tulisan Game Over, tanpa ada kepastian untuk menciptakan progress berarti di Continue selanjutnya? Selama datang di gua penuh keputusasaan!

Kombinasi Jurus yang Bikin Frustrasi

Mortal Kombat adalah salah satu franchise game fighting yang mengusung kombinasi jurus yang mudah untuk diakses, tentu saja, di luar gerakan Fatality. Hampir semua serangan khusus atau kombinasi serangan bisa diakses dengan rentet tombol yang terhitung sederhana, jika Anda membandingkannya dengan game seperti King of Fighters atau Guilty Gear, misalnya. Namun sayangnya, hal in tidak berlaku di MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero. Walaupun jurus bola es bisa diakses dengan cara yang sama dengan genre fightingnya, jurus Sub-Zero yang lain butuh kombinasi jurus yang terhitung absurd. Beberapa bahkan meminta Anda untuk melakukan block terlebih dahulu. What the hell..

Sensasi Setelah Memainkannya Kembali

Berangkat dengan penuh rasa optimisme, untuk kembali dihancurkan dan luluh lantak karenanya, kalimat yang satu ini tampaknya cocok untuk menggambarkan keseluruhan pengalaman memainkan MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero ini kembali. Kami sendiri merasa cukup percaya diri, bahwa dengan memainkan game-game sulit seperti Dark Souls dan punya pengalaman lebih banyak di genre platfomer, MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero akan jauh lebih mudah untuk dikuasai. Setidaknya memastikan bahwa rasa frustrasi yang sempat kami rasakan di masa lalu, tidak akan lagi terjadi. Bahwa kami akan dengan mudah menyelesaikannya dengan sistem Continue dan nyawa yang terbatas. Tapi apa yang kami temui? MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero membuktikan bahwa keyakinan kami lebih banyak berakhir sebagai omong kosong. Ia masih cukup kuat untuk membuat kami frustrasi, terutama karena cacat sisi gameplay yang membuat Sub-Zero sulit dikuasai secara penuh.

Terlepas dari rasa nostalgia yang tercipta, MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero memang harus diakui justru tumbuh sebagai sebuah game platformer usang. Ia mungkin akan membuat Anda kembali menggali ingatan yang membekas, namun sebagian besar darinya akan tampil sebagai memori buruk yang timbul dari rasa frustrasi karena sulitnya game ini untuk dikuasai. Tidak seperti minuman anggur yang semakin tua, semakin terasa bernilai dan lebih enak dinikmati, MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero justru seperti sebotol susu murni yang semakin tua usianya, yang akan menimbulkan penyakit jika ditelan paksa. Justru ada sedikit rasa tenang dan puas bahwa Netherrealm Studios tidak pernah terlihat tertarik untuk menghidupkan kembali franchise ini. MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero sepantasnya dikenal sebagai “blunder” franchise yang lebih baik, tenggelamd dalam waktu.

Namun tetap saja, untuk Anda yang tidak pernah mencicipi game ini dan penasaran dengan apa yang kami bicarakan, MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero selalu terbuka untuk Anda jajal. Dark Souls? Meh.
