The Cold City Lights ( poem for V.W.)

The cold city lights are

the only thing that warm me

when reflected on your skin

giving weight to naked silhouette

I sip on your shoulder,

and tongue its cracked plaster finish,

softer than the castle wall we press against;

closer than the other monsters we flee,

I eat flakes unending.

With our names written in the dust of tonights Bible -

I drink holy soma,

that flows from the golden river of your mane

and growing drunk, drunk, drunk

plunge my black hands deep, deep, deep

within your naked sermon -

Where the rain, lit by lightning

becomes a screen of holy diamonds

to hide the velvet jungle night

from the gaze of evil witches.

Where from the mouths of electric fish

that speak without words

I catch the names of forgotten passion

that echo loud, loud, loud as the crash of blood

colouring Babylons burning blush crimson

and feed them to your mouth and soul

with my holy liars tongue.

Where this simple silhouette becomes complicated

outside the language of fire and star

and we rise high, high, high

beyond the music of the street

to meet the cry, cry, cry -

of other nightbirds and midnight apes

masquerading as gentle women and civilised men.
