Dragonlord was initially the Archon I wanted to start building my Conclave Arcana deck for Modern. While waiting for the various conflicts, I completed the Foundations Archons and acquired my first common and rare reward cards. When it was released, its price was quite high, and I had to wait. In fact, I acquired Sheng Xiao first and began my journey through the silver and gold leagues with him. It wasn't until last month that I was able to get the offer of $13.50 per copy, and I think I did so at a very good time because there are hardly any offers for this Archon anymore, and the few that are available are priced at $30 per copy! Let's start with the ability it shares with units that have the same lineage affinity: Scavenger. This ability simply increases the card's maximum health by +1 for each unit that falls onto the battlefield. The lineages that can benefit from this ability are Saurian and Bruteborn. When I checked my deck to see which cards I had with this lineage, I realized I had almost none, and those I had gotten from starter packs and rewards weren't at a high enough level. Now, let's look at the tactical abilities this Archon can apply to any two units you choose in your lineup: They are two truly exceptional abilities: Bloodlust, an ability initially exclusive to Gladiator cards, which you can now apply with this Archon. This ability allows you to buff all the card's stats as long as it eliminates enemy cards in combat. And the second ability is Corrupted Healing, an ability previously only available on the reward card: Arachne Weaver of the Death class. It allows you to heal all units in the lineup by reducing their maximum health by 1 point, so it's an ability that has a benefit, but also a cost. > Veamos ahora, las habilidades tácticas que este arconte puede aplicar a 2 unidades que escojas en tu alineación: Son 2 habilidades ciertamente excepcionales: Bloodlust una habilidad que inicialmente era exclusiva de las cartas gladiadoras, con este arconte la puedes aplicar. In this first battle, I wanted to see how far I could push a unit's ability to increase its maximum health with the Scavenger and Corrupted Healing abilities. If we look closely, a unit with Scavenger gains +1 maximum health, so when healed with Corrupted Healing, which reduces maximum health by -1, it's as if both abilities cancel each other out. The question is, what happens if that unit has Bloodlust? Or another ability like Life Leach? That's what we're going to see in this battle. > En esta primera batalla quise ver hasta donde podía llevar la capacidad de una unidad para aumentar su vida máxima con las habilidades carroñero y corrupted healing. Si nos fijamos bien, una unidad con carroñero aumenta en +1 su vida máxima por lo que al ser sanado con corrupted healing que resta -1 de vida máxima, es como si ambas habilidades se cancelaran una a la otra. To begin, I want to highlight one of the fundamental pieces of my lineage: Songale. This card was one of the first epics I invested in leveling to 3, and that's because of its Bloodline Tribute ability, which boosts the stats of units with which it shares Bloodline. If they share the same attack, it increases the damage by +1. It's an ideal card because we'll be using units that benefit from this ability, but it also has the Reckless ability, which deals damage to adjacent units, so we must make sure to pair this card with others that have the Painforge ability. > Para empezar, quiero destacar una de las piezas fundamentales de mi alineación y es Songale, esta carta fue de las primeras épicas en las que invertí en llevar al nivel 3 y eso es por su habilidad tributo de linaje, que potencia las estadísticas de aquellas unidades con las que comparte linaje y si comparten el mismo ataque aumenta en +1 el daño. In my post with Captain Frankie, I elaborated on the great advantage of the Shapeshift ability, which, in short, allows these cards to benefit from the lineage abilities and synergies of Archons and units with the Lineage Tribute ability, such as Songale. We then have Calamity, who steals life at level 2 but has the disadvantage of having Electrify, and the second card is Portia Nyr with the Painforge ability, which can gradually increase her damage as she receives Electrify from Calamity and Reckless from Songale. To round out our lineup, in the front line we use two incredibly useful cards to deal with magic units, which are always a constant in the modern meta: Nim Guard Captain and Ujurak Brave. These two cards complement each other very well; the former because it has Void and can resist magic attacks, and it also has a high amount of defense. While the second card can't attack from that position, it reduces the magic damage of enemy units. Together, these two cards make a good front line for now, until we get a better tank. > Para cerrar nuestra alineación, en la vanguardia usamos 2 cartas tremendamente útiles para lidiar con unidades mágicas que siempre suele ser una constante en el meta de moderno, Nim Guard Captain & Ujurak Brave son 2 cartas que se complementan muy bien, la primera porque tiene vacío y puede resistir los ataques mágicos y cuenta con gran cantidad de defensa. We sent our battle, and when I saw the enemy lineup, I knew this battle wouldn't be easy. Not only did they have the same Archon, but in the last two positions, they had Suiko and Tenrai! It wasn't just the first time I'd faced them; I had no idea what to do, as I hadn't understood how the Kindred Will and Kindred Spirit abilities worked until that battle. During the first few rounds, reducing magic damage was a good strategy because, in addition to the two Anniversary cards, they also had a level 2 Calamity, and using Gravebrand Warlock, which increased our movement speed by +1, was also beneficial. Even so, we took a lot of damage in the first four rounds, to the point that we lost our decoy and both front-line tanks. It seemed the end was near for us. > Enviamos nuestra batalla y cuando veo la alineación enemiga entendí que esta batalla no sería nada sencilla. Things worsened in the 5th round, as we lost Gravebrand Warlock and were left with only Portya and Calamity. But here's the difference that ultimately became the turning point. Calamity was virtually a damage sponge, and with each round, she electrified Portya, passively increasing her damage, which was already boosted by Songale's tribute lineage. Together, they dealt tremendous damage, and despite Dar 'Gottem' Gearnut's high health, he was an unparalleled tank! Then, unfortunately for our opponent, Tenrai fell to Calamity's electrification in the 7th round, and Lorn was dispatched by our Calamity activating his Bloodlust. From the 8th and 9th rounds onward, the battle took a turn in our favor. Our opponent's Calamity was certainly a life sponge, but it didn't boost her damage, so she eventually succumbed, and finally, Suiko was dispatched by Portya to seal the victory! > Las cosas empeoran cuando llega el 5to round, pues perdimos a Gravebrand Warlock y solo quedamos con Portya y Calamity. It was undoubtedly an epic battle, reminiscent of the legend of Siegfried defeating the dragon with his sword and bathing in its blood to become invincible—only this time there were two! The difference ultimately lay in the lineage tribute of the decoy and the painforge of Porty Nyr, and the presence of electrify from Calamity. Since I imbued both cards with the scavenger ability, they reached enormous levels of health, allowing them to boost each other's damage and absorb most of the attacks. Our three most prominent units will be: Doldrus, the only unit with shapeshift that we'll train to attack; Fenmor Wood Troll, a ranged unit of the earth class but of Bruteborn lineage, which blinds enemies and reduces damage from ranged units; and finally, Godsnot Sorceress, another Bruteborn ranged unit but of the life class. As on the battlefield, all units have the Thorns ability, so we'll avoid using melee units and focus solely on ranged attacks. This is where the Shiraza card is key; we buy it at level 2 to give it the Weapons Training ability, allowing Doldrus to perform magic attacks. Although this unit is fast, we must ensure the opponent doesn't punish our vanguard in the early rounds. Therefore, we'll use the Songale decoy in the last position to deflect the initial attacks and, by sacrificing itself, empower the Drakoshan units with the Shapeshift ability. > Como en el campo de batalla, todas las unidades tienen la habilidad thorns, evitaremos usar unidades melé y solo de ataques a distancia. We're sending the battle, and as the final element of our lineup, the Wild format card we chose was Bakjira. It's the best tank because we can equip it with Weapons Training, increasing our maximum HP and reducing the enemy's speed. Initially, the enemy attacks were absorbed by the decoy, and upon falling, it boosted the damage of Shiraza and Doldrus. Now, with more damage, we eliminated the enemy tank, and our two Bruteborne units became the artillery that demolished the enemy lineup and achieved victory. > Enviamos la batalla y como elemento final de nuestra alineación, la carta del formato wild que escogimos fue Bakjira, es el mejor tanque ya que podemos armarlo con weapons training, nos aumenta la vida máxima y reduce la velocidad del enemigo. Inicialmente los ataques enemigos fueron absorbidos por el señuelo y al caer potencia el daño de Shiraza y Doldrus, ahora con más daño eliminamos el tanque enemigo y nuestras 2 unidades Bruteborne se convirtieron en las artillerías que demolieron la alineación enemiga y lograr la victoria.

Well, friends, these were my strategies with Dragonlord Mancer. Without a doubt, this Archon is endlessly fun to play, but of course, it has its limits, one of which is its high mana cost, making it difficult to plan a lineup with 30 mana or less. Above that limit, it's an ideal option for progressing in the Modern format. I'm currently starting to use it in tournaments and am very well positioned for a Gold League tournament, even though my Archon is at level 2! In short, this Archon has proven why it's so expensive.
