Amongst electronic music makers there are two major factions 1. Hardware synthesiser users 2. Laptop producers Both of them have constantly battled through the ages to prove superiority of one over the other. The hardware guys usually attribute their superiority to the purity of analog equipment (and thus the sound produced) over the fake, mildly downsampled sounds a computer produces. The battles rage to this day, and if you find yourself amidst a synth vs laptop fight. Get Out!!. It generally gets bloody as people on both sides get butthurt easily. I belong on the side that supports the laptop producer, not because I believe in anything remotely related to convention but because I feel the whole concept of More Gear. Better Music. is fundamentally flawed. (Also because I can't afford gear). Both sides are susceptible to this misconception, the software guys keep wanting more plugins and the hardware guys keep buying new synths. But neither of them ever manage to execute the Ideas. Any great idea has its merit in its execution. Without execution one doesn't get the chance to materialise the said great Idea. But execution can take a thousand routes. You could do it with a million dollar budget or you could do it with freeware. But the real torchbearer of ace execution are the ones that successfully execute a project under severe limitation. It is these guys that work using a laptop and a tiny MIDI keyboard and yet are able to deliver the Idea in its potent form. The total cost they would incur could run to less than 500 dollars. But their product could be worth thousands of dollars. But what is their secret? Are they hustlers? Are they born gifted? Are they just lucky? I believe it is the limitation itself that drives people to succeed beyond measure. When an individual is limited the human mind is forced to think laterally and come up with a solution that delivers results comparable to having no limitations at all. Some people call it resourcefulness, but in its essence it's creativity. Creativity that is induced by limitation. I created this video using just a metronome, a 1 bar drum track and a video editor. These were the only tools i allowed myself to have and after having to force myself to work with them I created a product that was far greater than the sum of all those elements combined individually. (Im not saying its a smash hit, it's basic at best) I wanted to create caricature of the idea that 'The human brain is the best piece of gear anyone could afford, and guess what, you can't really complain that you don't have one' So get to work!! And stay creative!!
