Greetings to all the Movies community, for days I was planning to review Father Stu, a movie that I saw recently and as well as surprised me, it left me with some things to think about.

Father Stu, or The Miracle of Father Stu, is an American drama film based on true events, starring Mark Wahlberg and Mel Gibson, and directed by Rosalind Ross. The film is mainly focused on its main character Stuart Long, or better known as Stu. A retired boxer, not too well known in the boxing world, who according to a series of events has a vision and decides to turn his life towards faith and religion.

Saludos a toda la comunidad de Movies, desde hace días tenía pensado hacer la reseña sobre Father Stu, una película que me vi hace poco y así como me sorprendió, me dejó con algunas cosas para reflexionar.

Father Stu o El milagro del padre Stu, es una película estadounidense de drama basada en hechos reales, protagonizada por Mark Wahlberg y Mel Gibson, y dirigida por Rosalind Ross. La película está principalmente enfocada en su personaje principal Stuart Long, o mejor conocido como Stu. Un boxeador retirado, no lo demasiado conocido dentro del medio, que de acuerdo a una serie de acontecimientos tiene una visión y decide encaminar su vida hacía la fe y la religión.

Let's talk a little more about its official review and then get into the topic of my opinions and/or reflections without going too much into spoilers.

Sometimes I myself wonder, how great the miracles must be to change the lifestyle of a person who is as far away from religion as possible.

Besides being a movie based on true events, it is incredible to see beyond religion how a man who did not even believe in himself, looks for ways to improve himself and change the mentality of other people. People who are going through a bad situation and have lost any kind of faith to get ahead. Personally I am not too much of a believer in religion, I mean, I believe in something beyond what we can see or hear, but I do not agree with many behaviors imposed by religion, many priests today want to benefit themselves with false words and false promises deceiving a lot of people to believe in something that goes beyond a controlled fanaticism.

Vamos a hablar un poco más sobre su reseña oficial para luego adentrarnos en el tema de mis opiniones y/o reflexiones sin entrar demasiado en spoiler.

A veces yo misma me pregunto, que tan grandes deben ser los milagros para cambiar el estilo de vida de una persona que es lo más alejado posible a la religión.

Además de ser una película basada en hechos reales, es increíble ver más allá de la religión como un hombre que no creía ni en sí mismo, busca la manera de mejorar así mismo y cambiar la mentalidad de otras personas. Personas que se encuentran pasando por una mala situación y han perdido todo tipo de fe para salir adelante. Personalmente no soy demasiado creyente de la religión, quiero decir, creo en algo más allá de lo que podemos ver o escuchar, pero no estoy de acuerdo con muchos comportamientos impuestos por la religión, muchos sacerdotes en la actualidad quieren beneficiarse a sí mismos con falsas palabras y falsas promesas engañando a un montón de personas para creer en algo que va más allá de un fanatismo controlado.

Playing the main character I imagine was not easy, Mark Wahlberg certainly makes an impacting role, however not everything in the film is about the physical transformation, that is, although I found a shocking role at some point, I feel it lacked a bit of emotion, perhaps enter at a sentimental level in the character. In the film we can observe all the relevant aspects that Wahlberg portrays in honor of the character, however it fails to transcend through emotion and feeling.

The film has lost success in the United States due to the lack of emotion and plot, which does not directly make it a bad film, just lacking in some aspects.

On the other hand, Mel Gibson's performance as a carefree alcoholic father is impeccable, I hadn't seen Mel Gibson on screen for a long time and I simply loved it, if the movie in the future would be included in the academy award which I doubt, Mel Gibson would be nominated, and I'm not exaggerating. The role he plays as an alcoholic father and uncommitted to his family I liked, especially because at some point he shows sincere regret.

Interpretar al personaje principal imagino no fue nada fácil , Mark Wahlberg sin duda hace un papel impactante, sin embargo no todo en la película se trata de la transformación física, es decir, aunque me pareció un papel impactante en algún punto, siento que le falto un poco de emoción, quizás entrar a nivel sentimental en el personaje. En la película podemos observar todos los aspectos relevantes que Wahlberg retrata en honor al personaje, sin embargo no logra transcender mediante la emoción y el sentimiento.

La película ha perdido éxito en Estados Unidos debido a la falta de emoción y argumento, lo que no la convierte directamente en una película mala, solo carente en algunos aspectos.

Por otro lado, la actuación que hace Mel Gibson como padre alcohólico despreocupado es impecable, tenía tiempo sin ver en la pantalla a Mel Gibson y simplemente me ha encantado, si la película en un futuro fuese incluida al premio de la academia que lo dudo, Mel Gibson estaría nominado, y no exagero. El papel que hace como un padre alcohólico y poco comprometido con su familia me ha gustado, sobre todo porque en algún punto muestra arrepentimiento de forma sincera.

I first saw Cody Fern on screen, acting for American Horror Story, and although her character in the film is not very relevant, I think she handled it quite well, conveying a sense of pride, guilt and an unflattering attitude, coming to seem somewhat rigid from which we can clearly see that she is hiding something.

Rosalind Ross is a relatively new director, the only thing I knew about her is that she is currently Mel Gibson's wife. So, this is probably the only film she has ever written and directed.

#

For being practically a rookie in the business she hasn't done too bad, maybe in a couple of years she can improve the quality, what I mean is that despite being a low budget film she managed to deliver a message.

Vi por primera vez en la pantalla a Cody Fern, actuando para American Horror Story, y aunque su personaje en la película no es muy relevante, creo que lo manejó bastante bien, transmitiendo un sentimiento de orgullo, culpa y una actitud poco favorecedora, llegando a parecer algo rígida de la que podemos ver claramente que esconde algo.

Rosalind Ross es una directora relativamente nueva, lo único que sabía de ella es que actualmente es la esposa de Mel Gibson. Por lo que, probablemente esta sea la única película que ha escrito y dirigido.

Para ser prácticamente una novata en el oficio no le ha ido tan mal, quizás en un par de años pueda mejorar la calidad, a lo que me refiero es que a pesar de ser una película de poco presupuesto a logrado entregar un mensaje.

While Stu moves to Los Angeles in order to become an actor, he meets a woman named Carmen, a faithful Catholic who doesn't seem to fall for his bad boy charms. Unsuccessful at first, he decides to enter this woman's life by going as much as possible to church in order to change her mind and win her over.

However, when the girl seems to be interested in him. Stuart has an accident as a result of careless drunk driving. Apparently, he has some kind of vision, where he feels like his life could change and decides to go through the transition.

#

Some priests and members of the religion doubt Stu's intentions based on his background and think it unlikely that his intentions are good and true. So they decide, some time to make the decision. Stuart has many things to think about, besides his apparent interest in the church, such as the problems surrounding his family and the sadness that overwhelms him with the death of his younger brother, is diagnosed with a degenerative disease in the muscles of the body, which evidently will progress over time. The news is a bit hard to assimilate, his parents simply can't believe it, it seems that when things start to get better, there are difficult moments to face.

Mientras Stu se traslada a los Ángeles con el fin de convertirse en actor, conoce a una mujer llamada Carmen, fielmente católica que parece no caer ante sus encantos de chico malo. Sin tener éxito al principio, decide adentrarse en la vida de esta mujer acudiendo en la medida de lo posible a la iglesia con el fin de hacerla cambiar de opinión y poderla conquistar.

Sin embargo, cuando la chica parece interesarse en él. Stuart, tiene un accidente producto de conducir ebrio sin cuidado. Al parecer, tiene algún tipo de visión, dónde siente como su vida podría cambiar y decide pasar por la transición.

#

Algunos sacerdotes y miembros de la religión dudan de las intenciones de Stu según sus antecedentes y creen poco probable que sus intenciones sean buenas y verdaderas. Por lo que deciden, un tiempo para tomar la decisión. Stuart tiene muchas cosas en las que pensar, además de su aparente interés por la iglesia, como los problemas que rodean su familia y la tristeza que le embarga la muerte de su hermano menor, es diagnosticado con una enfermedad degenerativa en los músculos del cuerpo, que evidentemente ira avanzando a medida del tiempo. Una noticia un poco fuerte para asimilar, sus padres simplemente no lo pueden creer, parece que cuando las cosas comienzan a mejorar, se acercan momentos difíciles de afrontar.

It is a film that has a very encouraging message, far beyond religion or church, a message that leaves us to reflect on how much we have to fight for what we really want, even if that fight is with ourselves.

What I mean by this is that many times we ask ourselves "Why me? or "What did I do to deserve this? I feel that the hardest thing of all is the fight we have to win against ourselves, to realize that we are capable of everything we really want to achieve or see reflected in others. On the other hand, many people criticized Stuart claiming that "it was too late to change", when clearly it was not, finally after many years of trying to get on a path that would lead him to something he was good at he arrived.

Finally things seemed to make sense in his life, it wasn't easy to feel that when you finally get a path the obstacles present themselves, but I think that's what life is all about, being able to fight against the odds.

It is a film that clearly leaves a message, I just would have liked to see a little more of Father Stu's sermons, sometimes you get to see how he goes to prison to give the word to a group of people who feel lost, that their life is over and that it no longer makes sense to believe in a God. A very emotional part that I would have liked to see more.

Anyway, although I recommend it as a mere entertainment movie and not as a movie that has broken the box office numbers, I would rate it a 6/10 for lack of plot in some scenes. Generalizing it is a good movie but it lacked things like excitement and intrigue. If you decide to see it, let me know.

Es una película que tiene un mensaje muy alentador, mucho más allá de la religión o de la iglesia, un mensaje que nos deja reflexionar sobre cuánto tenemos que luchar por lo que realmente queremos, incluso si esa lucha es consigo mismo.

Quiero decir con esto que muchas veces nos preguntamos "¿Por qué a mí? o ¿Qué hice para merecer esto? Siento que lo más dificil de todo es la lucha que tenemos que ganar contra nosotros mismos, darnos cuenta que somos capaces de todo aquello que realmente queremos lograr o ver reflejado en otros. Por otra parte, muchas personas criticaron a Stuart alegando que "era muy tarde para cambiar", cuándo claramente no fue así, finalmente después de muchos años intentando conseguir un camino que lo llevará realmente a algo en lo que era bueno llegó.

Finalmente las cosas parecían tener un sentido en su vida, no fue fácil sentir que cuándo por fin consigues un camino los obstáculos se presentan, pero creo que de eso se trata la vida, de poder luchar en contra de las adversidades.

Es una película que claramente deja un mensaje, sólo me hubiese gustado ver un poco más de los sermones del padre Stu, en ocasiones se logra ver cómo acude a la prisión para dar la palabra a un grupo de personas que se sienten perdidas, que su vida está acabada y que ya no tiene sentido creer en un Dios. Una parte muy emotiva que me hubiese gustado ver más.

De todas maneras aunque la recomiendo a modo de ver como una película de mero entretenimiento y no como una película que ha roto los números de taquilla, la calificaría con un 6/10 por falta de argumento en algunas escenas. Generalizando es una película buena pero le ha faltado cosas, como emoción e intriga. Si deciden verla, me cuentan.
