Desde que el capitán Agüero descubrió dónde se bañaban las indias, las vigiaba todas las tardes; luego buscaba la manera de acercarse a una; de convencerla para que se fuera con él; de darle un regalo y una nueva inocencia para compartirla con las otras nativas, la de no saber para qué le serviría la baratija que le habían dado. Se había llevado varias, pero la guerra le había enseñado que si quieres llegar al corazón del fuego, primero hay que cortar su resistencia por las orillas; y él quería llegar hasta la hija del cacique; a quien ya anunciaba como su mayor trofeo, y si no la obligó fue porque para él era un juego la forma clandestina cómo se iba acostando con cada una, los regalitos que luego les daba, trozos de espejos para que se entretuvieran mirándose o de imanes para que pasaran el tiempo buscando qué adherirles; algunas veces les dio botones viejos y la idea de que se los pusieran en la nariz como hacían con las semillas o las conchas de algunas frutas; jugaba a engañar a las indias porque le daba placer la forma cómo las convencía y se dijo que volvería a la mar después de coronar a la hija del cacique. Se habían acabado los días de revuelta y los soldados entraban en una rutina desesperante; los guerreros nativos no fueron rivales para ellos, por eso la monotonía había empezado antes de enfrentarlos y por eso el capitán Agüero decidió pasar sus fastidios acostándose con las indias, pero en un juego doble; hacerlo a escondidas de sus soldados y confiando en su poder del engaño con las nativas. La tarde en que fue a observar a las chivas brinconas, como les decía a las mujeres, presintió que lo observaban, pero por más que agudizó su mirada para saber quién podía ser, no encontró a nadie. Cuando llegó a su cuarto aceleró la idea de hacerse con la hija del cacique; lo que no esperaba era encontrarla a boca de jarro porque cuando fue hasta su casa con la excusa de entregar órdenes nuevas al cacique, la encontró sola, como si las cartas para su coronación estuvieran echadas a su favor. Tampoco esperaba la amabilidad con que ella lo invitó a pasear por el campo mientras su padre regresaba de un asunto que ameritó su presencia. El capitán Agüero sintió una extraña y ligera perturbación al ver a la joven tan encantadoramente adornada como si quisiera disputarle a la luna la noche; por un momento se vio sumiso ante tanta belleza y no disimuló el placer ante el coqueteo que la joven le desplegó en los ojos, y que además, en su español enrevesado, le dijo: ─Sé que está por irse, Capitán. ─¿Cómo lo supo? ─Un guerrero se debe aburrir con tanta calma. ─Es cierto, por eso vivo encerrado en mi cuarto. ─¿Me llevaría con usted? El Capitán tenía la resistencia de los hombres forjados para la guerra, le gustaban los retos, los impulsos agresivos de sus contrincantes, y ante semejante propuesta se hizo el que no sabía qué hacer. ─Es imposible. No se admiten mujeres en la tripulación. ─Seré su mujer. ─Vaya esta noche a mi choza, demuéstreme que quiere ser mujer y la llevaré conmigo hasta el fin del mundo. *** El Capitán había ordenado sus cosas para partir por la mañana. Sobre su catre descansaban pétalos de flores silvestres que había tomado en el camino después de ponerse de acuerdo con la Joven Luna, como la llamó. Ella le había dicho que tuviera una vela encendida y que le hiciera espacio en su maleta para meter sus cosas. La noche estaba más oscura que nunca, cuando la joven entró, el Capitán sintió un corrientazo en el estómago que le llegó hasta su órgano varonil y supo que ya estaba listo para ella; pero ella lo detuvo con una caricia y le pidió que alzara la vela. La Joven Luna estaba en guayuco y la luz le descubría el brillo de su piel morena, el Capitán alcanzó a ver el centro de su universo, aquel ombligo modelado por sus dioses que le pareció el botón por donde se abrirían los secretos más exóticos de aquel continente que aún no terminaban de conocer. Siguió mirando y supo que aquel bosquecillo, virgen, guardaba todos los olores penetrantes del mundo y cuando puso sus dedos en sus pezones, descubrió la fuente de la eterna juventud, la leche sagrada de la vida. La Joven Luna era una verdadera conquista, lástima que no podría llevársela porque significaba compartirla con la tripulación hasta que, salvajemente la mataran. Antes de que el Capitán apagara la vela, sus senos estaban olorosos y llenos de una sustancia dulce y espesa como la miel. En la oscuridad, la Joven Luna le guio sus labios hasta sus pezones; donde él revivió sus días de niñez en su querida España; recordó el día cuando su padre lo llevó por primera vez a navegar; cuando supo que sería capitán y cuando estuvo frente al Orinoco, ese soberbio río que se le metió en los ojos como una serpiente de cristal, del que quería contarle a los hijos que había dejado en su patria. Desbordado de recuerdos estaba entregado a su verdadera conquista cuando el veneno le fulminó su alegría; sus recuerdos se fueron oscureciendo, su garganta se hundió en un último silencio; no pudo gritar, no pudo salir; la choza empezó a arder, el fuego despertó a los soldados, pero fue imposible sacarlo vivo de su conquista. The days of revolt were over and the soldiers entered into a desperate routine; the native warriors were no match for them, that is why the monotony had begun before facing them and that is why Captain Aguero decided to pass his annoyances by sleeping with the Indians, but in a double game; doing it hidden from his soldiers and trusting in his power of deception with the natives. The afternoon he went to observe the brinconas chivas, as he called the women, he sensed they were watching him, but no matter how hard he looked to see who it might be, he found no one. When he arrived at his room he accelerated the idea of getting the cacique's daughter; what he did not expect was to find her at the mouth of a jar because when he went to her house with the excuse of delivering new orders to the cacique, he found her alone, as if the cards for his coronation had been thrown in his favor. Nor did he expect the kindness with which she invited him to stroll through the countryside while his father returned from a matter that merited his presence. Captain Agüero felt a strange and slight perturbation at seeing the young woman so charmingly adorned as if she wanted to dispute the moon for the night; for a moment he found himself submissive before such beauty and did not disguise his pleasure at the flirtation that the young woman displayed in his eyes, and who also, in her convoluted Spanish, said to him: ─Sé que está por irse, Captain. ─How did you know? ─A warrior must be bored with such calm. ─That's true, that's why I live locked up in my room. ─Would you take me with you? The Captain had the stamina of men forged for war, he liked challenges, the aggressive impulses of his opponents, and in the face of such a proposal he played the one who did not know what to do. ─It is impossible. The captain had arranged his things to leave in the morning. On his cot rested wildflower petals that he had picked on the way after agreeing with Young Moon, as he called her. She had told him to keep a candle burning and to make room in his suitcase to pack his things. The night was darker than ever, when the young woman entered, the captain felt an impulse in his stomach that went all the way to his virile organ and he knew he was ready for her; but she stopped him with a caress and asked him to keep the candle lit. The Young Moon was in guayuco and the light uncovered the glow of her brown skin, the Captain could see the center of her universe, that navel modeled by her gods that seemed to him the button through which the most exotic secrets of that continent they did not yet know would open. She kept looking and knew that that virgin grove held all the penetrating aromas of the world and when she put her fingers on her nipples, she discovered the fountain of eternal youth, the sacred milk of life. Young Luna was a real conquest, too bad he couldn't take her with him because that meant sharing her with the crew until she was savagely killed. Before the captain extinguished the sail, her breasts were perfumed and filled with a sweet, honey-thick substance. In the darkness, the Young Moon guided the Captain's lips to her nipples; where he relived the days of his childhood in his beloved Spain; he remembered the day when his father took him to sail for the first time; when he knew he would be a captain and when he was in front of the Orinoco, that superb river that entered his eyes like a crystal snake, of which he wanted to tell the children he had left in his land. Overflowing with memories he was, engrossed in his true conquest when the poison fulminated his joy; his memories darkened, his throat sank into a final silence; he could not cry out, he could not get out; the hut began to burn, the fire awakened the soldiers, but it was impossible to get him out alive from his conquest. The young Luna went to her house, accompanied by the two natives who were in it when, in the morning, the captain had gone to visit her.
